Almost every game I play, my capital is on one of the 'corners' of my empire - therefore I am not getting the full benefit of the reduction to maintenance costs in other cities. I am always reluctant to move my capital because 1 - it is usually my best city and the happiness it brings is a huge help, and 2 - it costs production when I want to be building other things for the short-term gain at the crucial part of the game.
Does the long-term gain outweigh this? I usually capture 1 or 2 Forbidden Palaces as well as building my own, which helps a great deal, and is another incentive to keep my capital at my starting city.
Still chasing that elusive immortal win...
