combustion before I even know what oil is?

    Sub-terranian oil is not the only oil either.

    What oil did they use in their lamps? And to annoint people with?

    I think it was olive oil (no Popeye jokes). Get the wick of a lamp to melt over and seal, under just the right conditions... Boom! hey, look what oil can do!

    There's corn oil, several vegitables produce oil to greater or lesser degrees. There's rended fat from animals... There's lots of oil that's not subterranian crude oil.

    But, as someone already mentioned, it's not easy to make in bulk and was used for other things.

    EDIT: And that's just the "oil" family. There's several other substances that burn quite well... Alchol from all the wine they made. Something tells me a still or two blew-up before they caught on. There's chaff, that ruins how many silos a year even today?

    There's tons of stuff that combusts. Some even better than oil.
