I've heard about the scenarios a bit, but what new units, buildings, and gameplay has been added to the core game?

Another major difference in Warlords is that producing gold/research/culture is no longer affected by building multipliers for those items (e.g., bank & wall street for gold). Production of those is now only affected by production multipliers (forge, factory, power plant, ironworks).
Just build production multipliers instead of building gold multipliers. I find I even build research, even in modern age. (Then again, I've got vassal income of several hundred per turn).

Check it out rolling over the city screen gold numbers when you build gold. Especially if you have Wall Street (but not Ironworks) in that city.
Or in a city with Ironworks (but not Wall Street).

You mean when you change the PRODUCTION target to gold/research/culture. In this case the multiplier buildings that count are those affecting hammers, not the target itself. I take it this was not also true in vanilla?
(I ask as I didn't often switch production to one of those three categories in vanilla.)No matter where you go, there you are. - Buckaroo Banzai

Yah, in vanilla if you were "producing" gold, then hammer multipliers did not apply at all to the result, only the market, grocer, bank, wall street did.
It shocked me when I discovered the change in Warlords. The dynamic is just ... so different!

Sounds more like a bug or some kind of undocumented feature; not an appealing selling point when you think about it.
I almost did buy the xpack the other day, but I decided against that because the price does not seem worth it. Might get it later when the price has dropped and when I want to give cIV another try.
