  • Units activating after 'Upgrade All Units'

I remember when Civ 4 first came out I was annoyed because whenever I would upgrade all of a certain unit they would become activated and I would have to fortify all of them.

I think this went away with one of the patches, but now it is back.

How can I upgrade all of a certain type of unit without all the units activating?

    It was in the patches.

similarly when you take control of an AI civ in a MP game you have to refortify every unit manually

Okay.... I thought I was going crazy for a moment...

So my only hope is a Warlords patch then...

No, I don't think there is any hope for that.
It is USEFUL to have to put them back to sentry, stack by stack (using the Ctrl key to select all units of the same type).

The easy and elegant solution is to allow Alt+Sleep button to sleep all units of the selected type (just as Alt+Upgrade button upgrades all units of the selected type).

Beyond this, I think Alt+Any Button should perform the button action (sleep, upgrade, erase, etc..) in all units of the selected type. I think it's easy to implement (the code is prepared already, they only need to apply to ALL buttons instead of upgrade only).

Hope some day in a patch, this minor interface changes will be implemented.

The problem with having the units all awaken and needing to be fortified again is that they lose the full fortify bonus until five turns later when it is back to 25%. This can suck when your cities are under attack, since it reduces the benefit of the upgrade.

I used to find this a real pain. Also, I begrudged the fortify time that had been built up with its corresponding defensive bonus.

Now I kind of like it. I do some mass upgrades of obsolete units now and then when I have accumulated some cash. If I use tha alt+upgrade function, I know I won't get all the defenders, but I want to know which cities got the upgrade. (Is there a way to predict this seemingly random choice?) With the re-fortify step, I get a feel of where upgrades happen. That way I can focus on what key areas I think got left out and get them on purpose during the next upgrade.

Maybe it's not that I like the feature, it's just that I am trying to make the best of an otherwise annoying behavior.

I was under the impression you could hit the “eye” button then re-fortify and not lose the fortification time. Maybe that doesn't work for upgrades and I wasn't paying attention.

Yeah, when you have 200 Infantry spread out in 50+ cities, its just not funny.

although from both a gameplay and a realism standpoint, this seems acceptable. You can't expect newly upgraded units to be ready for intense battle right off the bat.

Just checked. Not an option. You do lose your fortication bonus.

For clarity, you lose the fortification bonus just from upgrading, right?

So you mean, that when you take over from an AI in multiplayer you also lose your fortification bonus there?!

                            That's absurd, if true.
