  • Expiring Spanish Citadel: Bug or Feature?

I ran a few tests on expiring UBs over the weekend, I found a few interesting results:

-Charismatic civs don't get +1 from expired monuments.
-When the obelisk expires, it no longer grants the ability to run two priests.

These results seemed logical enough, but the one that seemed really questionable to me was Spain's citadel: it no longer offers the +2 XP to siege units when Castles expire at gunpowder. To me, the extra XP was the main feature of the UB and to expire so soon after you build it doesn't seem right. It's not unheard of for me to research gunpowder even before I research engineering (though this is less common in Warlords).

I have to think this is probably a bug to expire Citadel's primary effect so soon.

I think you may be confusing the Monument (available to all civs, boosted by Charismatic) with the Obelisk (the Egyptian UB, allows two Priests).

I did refer to both in the intial post as an aside, but the main point was regarding the citadel.

Well, the same thing can be said for castles (and their +1 trade route), too.

They expire shortly after you build them.

I don't think that's a 'bug', since all the special features of a building expire when the building expires.

Perhaps you want the benefit to last longer, but I don't think it's designed to be.

In the spirit of the thread, this appears to be a "feature."

I don't know if it's fair that Spain's UB expires so quickly when, say, the Mongolian UB grants +2 XP to mounted units from early in the game all the way until the end of the game.

The difference is that Castles "expire" by granting the bonus to all cities. You don't lose anything by researching Economics. With the Citadel, you do.

True, and I don't dispute that the extra trade route should expire. But shouldn't they be able to keep the siege unit experience bonus?

I don't think it's a bug, I just think it's a design flaw to have castles expire so soon after being discovered. Moving them down the tech tree would work better. It's totally reasonable that once a building becomes obsolete it stops giving the benefits.

Castles only expire with Economics, so you decide when they go obsolete. If Spain researches steel you can get the +2 exp. on cannon. There are so many ways to get +2 exp. that the citadel as a UB is very weak anyway.

                      It's a feature.
Why should Citadel give bonus XP to modern artillery in time when such fortifications where obsolete?
