  • Uranium Bug

Not sure if this is old or new, but last night while I was playing, and waiting so patiently for my workers to mine the uranium source located on a plains square, when they finished I go into my city to immediately start building a destroyer so I can stop fighting off hoards or Frigates with Galleons (no iron) when the resource doesnt show up in my city list!

Shortly after I got a source of Aluminum and it showed up as it should. I mined and remined, and irrigated, and then remined the uranium again hoping it would notice it but to no avail.

If it matters, the square previously had a town on it, then the uranium popped up.

Irritating, but not game ending - play on.

    It's a Warlords innovation.
You cannot use uranium to fuel your ships without knowing how: research FISSION!

Is the answer that easy? It doesnt say Fission is a requirement when you hover over the unit, just Uranium. Maybe theres some hidden documentation in the civopedia~

The Civilopedia entry for Uranium shows that Uranium is revealed by Physics, but is enabled by Fission.

I thought my attacking Frigates with Galleons was completely uncalled for, but apparently without Iron you just have to make due with Frigates destroying all your water resources for just a few hundred years or so.

          Thx for the info~

PS: maybe they should put under the red text which reads "Requires Uranium" to also state "Requires Fission".

That is not just a "PS" thought! I was enraged to discover that my civ without oil could not build destroyers and transports to go get it from an island location defended by frigates once I mined uranium. I, too, tore it up and remined, yelled at the machine (I may be taking this game too seriously, my wife certainly thinks so), and otherwise fumed.

I don't usually research fission until the last moment, as I do not like the implications of the Manhatten Project for my carefully laid out cities. Guess i need to rethink this in such special circumstances. (Actually, the mechanism used by previous versions of Civ causing the research for a particular tech to become cheaper for the next civ as each civ researched it no longer applies in Civ IV, so there is really no reason to wait. Old habits die hard.)

Really? They got this fixed. I didn't see anything that mentioned it.

              I'm now a happy duck.

Considering I was just busy being enraged, why are you a happy duck?

what? Are you sure about this? I was so sure tech got cheaper the more civs you have contact with have it...?

Mostly because it was bludgeoningly unrealistic.

But also it reduced the importance of oil. The late game *should* see great power shifts as units (and their AIs) become dependant on oil and those Civs with an abundance of it. Uranium is relatively diffuse, so it was unlikely that a civ didn't either oil or uranium.

I understand air and armor can't be built without oil. But the seas are where oil gained its dominance. A fleet of battleships supporting Infantry and SAMs is pretty powerful, and the AI does not seem good at using its resources to its advantage.

Akaoz, I haven't seen it. Expected it, wanted it, sensitive about it, haven't seen it. Perhaps someone who knows the code could confirm this, but it seems to be different in this version. Relative prices for techs are clearly influenced by diplomatic relations, but not by the percentage of those who know it vice those who don't.

CarnalCanaan, interesting moniker. You are right, of course. What good is a dangerous to handle metal if you don't know how to use it? My rage was that I could not determine from the materials at hand why the in-game activity could not be performed. Realistic yes, sufficiently informative in game context no.

The logical answer would be the Vatican, but I doubt that's the answer though.
