  • Civilization groups?

    Hi,

I was wondering if there still was a concept such as continental groups like in CIV3 (european, african, american, etc.).
That was supposed to count as a bonus in your relationship with a neighbour if you were of the same group.

Religions have mostly replaced that, which allows more dynamic relationships which the player can influence, whereas you couldn't influence civ groups in civ III.
"For it must be noted, that men must either be caressed or else annihilated; they will revenge themselves for small injuries, but cannot do so for great ones; the injury therefore that we do to a man must be such that we need not fear his vengeance." - Niccolo Machiavelli

It'd be nice if it were "in addition to" rather than "instead of"...

Put the worms back in the can!

Besides, this concept makes no sense. Why, on a random map, should you get a bonus for civ that, in an entirely different universe on a world shaped in a particular way, would be your neighbour?

I'm one of those people that actually used "culturally linked start" in civ 3, and I miss it. It was nice to play the Japanese and start out near the Chinese, Koreans and Mongols. If it were to make a comeback, a simple +1 for cultural similarity would be good, IMO.

            why was there a +?

            from what i remember of history. . . i would think it'd be a -!

So, the Chinese would like the Mongols more? The Koreans would like the Japanese more? The French would like the English more?

Civ is supposed to be realistic, not a fantasy game

Cultural similarity would make people tend to get along better - since they can understand each other easier than a Chinese understands a European, for instance...
Now, for the retards among us... +1 is basically nothing when you compare -10 from "you declared war on us" or -4 from "our close borders spark tensions", etc. It's just a realistic nod to the fact that cultural similarity does help diplomatically.

I hate it when people that don't know crap try to make people feel as though they're stupid just because they can't understand a simple concept.

I wasn't freaking out over a video game, just stupidity.

Culturally linked starts couldn't have been too dumb of an idea, otherwise it wouldn't have made the Apolyton list way back before Civ3 was made, and then find it's way into the game...

Cultural similarity doesn´t mean ****, either in Civ or in RL. It´s not until the last 50 years or so it really has made any difference. At least in the west, we´re not fighting each other anymore. Now we´re bashing muslims left and right as they threaten our way of life. A massive -20 for "ZOMFG! You´re teh evilz"

The issue in question isn't culturally-linked starts - it's whether or not "culturally similar" civs should get diplomatic bonuses with each other. The former is cool. The latter is stupid.

You can argue whether cultural similarity should give a bonus or not, but I would like to be able to have cultural similarity affect starting location (as a turn on/off option). Maybe it could appear in the next expansion pack.

They also divide up the countries for unit looks and such, but I don't think they do such a thorough job, since they put the entire West in one category, the Far East in another, the Middle East, Africa, and Indigenous Americans.

The cultures within each group are so vast and different from each other that it almost seems counter-productive, but I can see why they do it for practical purposes.
