Several times in games when my position has not been good and the opposition has been demanding a city for peace, I have given my all to capture a city which I may have trouble holding for culture or military reasons, and then given that city back as a peace treaty trade, thus not losing anything of value to me. In one game I had to do that twice to one enemy before I finally got more powerful relative to him and conquered him in a 2 stage war of conquest.
