Hwachas are awesome

I just played the Koreans and the Hwachas are incredible. I was able to wipe out Rome (with Iron) with really no problem. Granted I had Elephants, but Rome is usually tougher. (I was playing Prince)

I wonder if they were really that effective in real life. Has anyone ever seen one (a replica). If so, was it that effective. I mean it looks like a cart with a bunch of rockets on that were lite together. Anyone who has every tried to get a couple bottle rockets to go off together knows how tough that can be.

Well apparently they were really good against Samurai, which they would just about be good at in the game...

I lived in Korea for 6 years (and now speak the language), so I'm a huge fan of stuff like this. It's fun that the article even mentions Civ and shows the unit from Civ 3.

I like Hwachas quite a bit too. I won a couple of multiplayer games yesterday as the Koreans, and building huge hordes of Hwachas was a key to one of the victories. They are much safer travelling unescorted than regular catapults- all they have to fear are Horse archers and other cats, really. Also, if the human player uses axes and spears to defend his cities, as they did in this case, the Hwacha just rips em up like nobody's business.

Eventually, people will learn to counter this by using more archers on defense, but for now they really pack a surprising whallop.

Mansa is just about to feel the power of Hwachas: he DoWd me to kill a workboat and, although I was pursuing a peaceful builder game, I think he must be made to suffer the consequences...
