Unit upgrades and experience

I just upgraded a rifleman who was 28/37 experience points to an infantry unit, who became 10/37 experience points. Is this right? Am I seeing things?

They lose their experience, but not their promotions. It's supposed to make it a strategic choice whether or not to upgrade your advanced units and also to keep upgraded units from being too powerful. What you're seeing is correct
