I doubt many experienced players would agree that you have no chance against a powerful civ on Monarch. OTOH, less experienced players might find it a challenge - of course it depends on the relative power.

If I only build one warrior per city and wait for Alex to come knocking then I'm in trouble on just about any level. At Monarch, you need a stronger army, which in turn requires more time to build and more cash to support it.

Monarch is a fairly big leap from Prince, and not very forgiving of unfocused play. It does narrow your strategic options compared to Prince, but not as much as Emp+.

For a strong player, Monarch is probably too easy, but some players like to play relaxed and within their comfort zone, others like a tough competition.

I do wish people would master or at least dominate one level before expecting to be able to beat the next though. I don't think one win at Monarch makes an Emperor-level player. It's amazing how many people seek advice for playing at the highest levels before mastering the basics.

So what level do you usually play?

How do they do this to win on higher lvs than monarch? I played monarch 2 times-1st time on archipelago, huge, temperature. And I won . I have started on a big island, nobody else started there... PCu fighted themselvs, so I were the first to built spaceship...
The second time I played monarch was: continents (If I remember well), huge, temperature... No chanches, because I usually built huge army when I can construct tanks, marrines, and altilery... So, when Cyrus attaks with 5 times more powerfull forces-no chanses :P...
And I don't play for relaxing :P, prince is not so easy (recently I won 3400 pts against 2000 (70% difference) ), because sometimes AI is stronger, bigger, and there are realy byg problems :P... OK, I start play monarch today, I'll say, if I won.

By the way... Are there any saves of people, who won on high levels??? Is there any subject about highest levels won? (If there is, please put a link to them here).

I play all sorts of levels - I have no set kind of routine. Although at higher levels I just hope to survive

Honestly I am not a great palyer, but that does not change the fact that the UN is one dimensional, and does this game no justice.

        It is (IMHO) ****e
I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

I am not a great player too, I think... Playing monarch I have 50% to win... Not so good... Prince-99%... But higher? ... I don't want to try, this could be massacre...
Now I am playing monarch, and I am going to have from 2 to 4 place of 10 players... Not so good :/...

Yeah, UN is rubbish.... I like the idea but I just don't understand how you can be everyone's fav civ for thousands of years and then lose the game in one turn when a rich AI buys off everyone else to vote against you. But if you're the baddie and try to buy the others off.... it never works.

I think this is one area they could really expand for Civ5 and make it interesting.... there's been good suggestions in this thread already.

I like cultural as I'm more of a builder.... but the AI is very weak at cultural victories. I'm thinking of firing up a Deity game (I usually play Prince/Monarch) with only Cultural enabled and seeing if the AI does well with it. The closest I've ever seen the AI come to a cultural victory was a Monarch marathon game (need 150 000 pts per city) and Fred had like 120k, 60k and 40k. Not very good at all.

I think the AI is poor at making long-term decisions.... if I run my culture at 30% for 150 turns I wll be close to a cultural victory, that kinda thing. They just build a huge amount of troops which they don't always use. Then again, there's been a number of times I've been too far behind in military and lost because of it. But I often go for a cultural vic on Monarch as I find it more satisfying than shifting hundreds of tanks around the map in the late game to get the win.
