  • Going to war with the Vassal

I am going for a domination victory and need the land from my vassals, the way I would do this would be war. But how can I go to war with them. I read that you go to war if they refuse to give something to you but they have several times and it won't declare war. How else can I declare war on my vassal?

You can only declare war on your vassal when they tell that they are breaking away.

You need ALL their land? You already get half of it for their being your vassals.

I don't have direct experience with warring on my capitulation vassals. If they get too big (compared to you, pop & land), or too small (lose 50% of their land & pop from time of capitulation), the vassalage is supposedly broken. I have read that you can make repeated demands until they stop giving in to them, but that may apply only to voluntary vassalage.

I made only a few demands and they stopped giving into them. And they went in to vassialization from war. I think this vassal system should be changed. Why can't the master nation break off the vassalization and go to war. What would be stopping them?

First, the Civilopedia says that when a vassal denies the master a resource, even if it is its last one, a state of war is supposed to start. I don't know if there's a bug or not, but I haven't seen that behavior consistently. Anyway, try that first.

Frankly, I agree, of course, that in "real life" nothing would keep the master from attacking the vassal...but for game purposes, accepting a vassal should have long-term effects (positive and potentially negative) in order to make these agreements be more than simple breaths between totally wiping out that civ. I wouldn't mind if Firaxis allowed the master to attack his own vassal as long as there were, for example, huge hits in diplomacy and maybe even happiness.

But to get to your question, I think you could also try a few things, though I haven't tried these myself:

          1) Gift the vassal enough border cities so that now he might break off the agreement. Will he do so immediately, or will that just make your relationship improve?

          2) Gift somebody else cities so that you shrink relative to the vassal. Also risky.

          3) Can you get another AI to attack your vassal but let the vassal get beat up so bad he quits the agreement? Of course, he might become the vassal of another AI, and perhaps you don't want to engage in that kind of war yet?

Arg.. I hate those bugs. I don't want to risk it though, I'll just quit the game and call myself the winner (I already had 48% of the land and 65% of the population, with double the military of anyone else)

I thought the vassal's land counted as your own for Domination.

Only half of it... I would have probabally gotten all I needed for domination if I finished taking them over.

Can't you just take the land from any other non vassal civs? Probably easier said than done but I'm curious why it isn't mentioned yet.

You can't give your vassals cities. I already tried this.

Well, yeah. There's the whole "Actually win the game" attitude.

We won't get anywhere that way.

hmmm.... Vassal refuses to give me 3500 (all he has) gold, but no war.

Question...... If a ceasefire agreement exists (10 turns no war declaring), can the vassal refuse a demand without war braking out?

The vassal also refused to give me 2 techs (they were red, i couldn't select them)... why not?

Another thing i noticed, i can derect the research of the vassal through the diplomacy screen, (as if we had a permanent alliance) but i don't get the tech afterwards... funny.

Matt, was that a peaceful or capitulation vassal? Might make a difference.

                              You can only demand resources.
