  • Weird AI trading

I start alone on an island and when at last discovering Astronomy I'm in dire need of some health resources.

The only available resource is cow from Augustus so I trade one of my plenty Suger resources for his cow.

Saladin declares war to me which will be a cold war since he can hardly reach my island.

Augustus gets into war with Mao. Probably a very hot war considering their very long common border.

That war doesn't go well for Augustus, major pillaging by Mao. Concerned about my cow I buy every few turns Augustus' map for 10 gold to check the state of his lands.

That pillaging can cost me my cow but can also mean opportunity: cancelled roman trades means possible other resources coming available again. So I check what trades the romans have and to my suprise they receive cow from Saladin while they still have two functioning cow pastures. Apparently at some time they didn't have cow and set up a trade with Saladin. But later they got two cows of their own and never cancelled that trade, I consider that a bug. (There could be reasons to keep that trade but those reasons are a level of diplomacy I doubt the AI considers.)

Both pastures get pillaged, I keep receiving my cow from the romans though. Effectively I get cow from Saladin whom I'm at war with.

I check what the romans send Saladin in exchange for the cow: copper. Their last coppermine is most likely going to be pillaged very soon, meaning my arabian cows could be cut off so I decide to give Augustus one of my three copper resources.

The coppermine is soon history as expected. The cow trade still goes on. Now i'm at war with Saladin while providing him with copper and he me with cow using the romans as middleman. Unlike most middleman however the romans don't recieve any benefit from their position, they're just a gateway.

An interesting situation. The essential question however is: why don't the AI's cancel trades when they're not profiting from it anymore.

This happens to humans also. If you trade for resource x before connecting any of x that's in your lands the trade will continue after you have accessed your own x. I usually stick with the trade unless something better comes along so that I can trade away the extra to someone else.

I think it's a good system to have but I also suspect that the AI may not be developed enough to take full advantage of it. If there was another resource elsewhere that Augustus would have prefered it would have been better for him to cancal both of your trades. Otherwise he was doing the best that he could - gaining improved relationship.s

Uh ... yeah, how did you find out?

Mousing over the leaderhead in the 'relations' screen of the foreign advisor. Bottom of the pop up.

Thanks. I now remember seeing that at bottom of that once.

            A very beautiful oddity.

Sometimes you dig into the details and find something you never would have guessed.

And it enabled you to perform a very strategy donation of copper. You can snicker at clueless Saladin (though he benefits too, you KNOW he wouldn't allow it if he knew), and you can also have a hearty laugh over how you have taken advantage of Caesar's stubborn clinging to old trades.

What's that have to do with...oh, "Weird A.I. Trades". I thought the title of the thread was "Weird Al Trades".
