Temple of Artemis (+100% Trade Route Yield)
+ Great Lighthouse (+2 Trade Routes in Coastal Cities)
+ Cothon (+1 Trade Route, +50% Trade Route Yield)
+ Free Market (+1 Trade Routes per city)

    Try it. It's pretty wicked.

They probably would have been if Rome hadn't obliterated them.

Actually, for a long time before they fought Rome, they were a lot like the British Empire (at least in the mediteranian). They owned colonies all over the place, had a large navy to protect them and was very wealthy.

But Rome (and somethings Carthage did) limited how powerful they could have become.

Then watch your economy crash once you discover astronomy and corporation.

Well, not crash exactly since you get some back, but I do hate obsolete-ing the Great Lighthouse.

              edit: spelling. astrononomy, ha!

                Add an airport, and corporation.

I think this sounds really good as a long term plan, but I think DirtyMartini had a point. Once a few technologies roll around, you'll need a new strategy.

The bonuses are obliterated in the late game - Great Lighthouse, Temple of Artemis and Castle trade route bonuses go - but to have them for so long up until that point will be a big deal; should give a great lead.

Just won a game trying this in the capital with Bureaucracy running.

It was sick until late Renaissance. Managed to also stick The Colossus in there so the city was spitting out Great Merchants like no tomorrow, who all went into the Confucian holy city as superspecialists to cushion the blow once the Artemisian bubble popped.

Pretty sure corporation obsoletes Great Lighthouse and pretty sure economics (and resulting free market) obsoletes castle. For a net -1 route following discovery of these techs and implementation of free market relative to the situation prior to their discovery. So, in the middle to end game, this strategy will come back to the pack to a degree, with cothon still allowing 1 extra trade route to the Carthaginians that is not available to other civs and Temple of Artemis providing a nice boost. Hmmm...can't remember if the TofA becomes obsolete or not.

Nevertheless, I agree that this is a strong strategy for Carthage. Pre-economics you can spam coastal cities and do pretty well. Post economics, other Civs play catch up in number of routes. Make sure to prioritize currency as well (+1 trade routes and obsoletes nothing). Throw in the Colosus and you maximize the financial trait as well, though your production may be lacking as you work those coastal tiles. Whip anyone?

Colosus has better synergy with financial trait than the UB/trade route business...Then again, Financial is pretty synergistic with the beaucoup trade routes in the grand scheme...Maybe that's synsynsynergism...cubed.

Is the cothon the replacement for the harbour?
