I'm pretty confident the barbs are capped at riflemen for land units and galleys for navel units. I don't believe they're allowed siege units either, might be all change in Warlords though I suppose.

        Yeah, it's great.

But, and please correct me if I'm wrong , you don't get any XP from the battles right? Even when the barbs have grenadiers?

        It drives me nuts........

None after the first 10 XP.

Even so, barb cities are extremely cheap and easy to capture and the best way to get a headstart on a new continent.

Shame that the barbs get stuck with galleys. What 16th-19th century privateers/pirates?

So you discover a barb continent, stuffed full of advanced (ish) barb units.

What you gonna send, green units or experienced?

Whats the difference between destroying a barb grenadier, and say Monty's grenadier - nothing really, except you effectively get no xp for the barbs.

Play Pangea I say, on huge, and on Marathon, though thats too short

Well since your units will probably be one or two levels more advanced than the barbs – in my example I had macemen, knights, choks and catapults against swords, axes and archers – you may not really need top of the range units. It will, of course, depend on the general level of other civs and if the barbs have longbows you’ll want some more experienced units. Even so, the bulk of the army could be CR I and II and these will continue to gain experience up to CR III while they are knocking out the barb cities.

Either way, the barb cities will be easier to take than the AI civ cities and the continent will be a lot easier to capture than one occupied by other civs. I think the 10 XP limit is a small price to pay for a cheap cities.

I saw a barb Colossus once on a Terra map. The barbs do seem to advance their tech very quickly, considering they have no international trade routes and don't trade techs.

Anyone else seen Barbs build wonders?

I never have, but then I usually play pangea.

                    That's a dirty trick.

I can understand that the barbarians should be "given" a certain minimum level of technology, just so they can be a reasonable threat to the human and AI civs. But taking wonders - assuming that they don't have to "build" them the way other civs do - seems unfair. After all, there's only so many of them.

I'd be curious about other barbarian wonders people have seen. Can they build National Wonders, I wonder?

I saw a barbarian Collossus once also, but I am not certain if they built it themselves or if they captured the city from a civilization that was destroyed before I got there. It was on a Continents map.

I guess the only way to know for sure is to check the city name.

It wasn't obvious. There are some cities which I cannot tell if they are barbarian or Aztec in origin!

barbarians get any tech that all the other players have.

Barbarians should be able to build wonders, and anyway, it makes the city that much sweeter to capture.

Barbarians can also research their own tech, their development is not pegged to the progress of the proper players.

I would like it if the best Barbarian city and any barbarian cities around it got to become a new civ when one is eliminated.

Yeah, Aztecs are basically Barbarians with settlers and diplo!
