XP for Great General? - Missing Something

I started but didn't have too much time to get into the game. But I noticed that the XP report toward generating a great general (in the military advisor screen) doesn't seem to be changing. Admittedly, I didn't get far. But one of my units got two promotions while fighting barbarian animals and the screen still shows 0/30 toward a great general. Anyone know what's up?

XPs you get from killing Barbs does not increase the GG meter.

are the GG caps scaled based on speed? Is 30/60/etc for normal games (and 20/40/60 for quick games)?

Yeah, they get scaled, same as the thresholds for regular Great People do.
