If that is all they do then it is small. Put it this way, the Chariot, Axemen, Swordsmen, Spearmen and Archer all serve a purpose. Now the Horse Archer doesn't really. Lone attackers are more than likely going to be mele units which you would want to have Chariots for. You can also use Chariots to pillage. Spearmen cannot take out the Chariot as the Chariot gets a bonus against them. I can see the Chariot becoming the next Axemen now. Just build Chariots...

Complimentary edit: Spearmen still counter chariots.
But Chariots get the same bonus against Spearmen.

I gotta say, this system looks really intereting *licks lips* Can't wait

Uhh, Chariots get no bonus vs. Spearmen. They still don't standa chance vs. Spearmen.

Gallic Swordsman can gain further Guerilla promotions.

Guerilla III provides a bonus when attacking *into* hills.

I heard that Horse Archers get a 20% withdraw chance, is that right? Also, do Numidian Mecenaries still start with Flanking (and does that mean they have a 30% withdraw chance?).

Here's something else interesting, the Spanish Citadel gives a free trade route until economics! That was never mentioned before!

The manual only has the info on the new warlord-only promotions. I can't find anything about guerilla III anywhere.
-edit, ah, thanks for the info Solver!

That would mean the Celts strategy will counter a strategy of settling on hills for a defensive stance - I like it

Now THIS is the type of fun and interesting way of balancing things

The Celtic unique unit is looking a lot better all of a sudden. First promotion gives +1 movement point, second promotion gives a hill attack bonus. Nice.

What about the changes to the Drill promotions: Are the First Strikes still included or are there other First Strike promotions? Drill I, II and III give bonuses to protecting units from collateral damage.

Also, Solver (with your experience with the game), what's really to stop people from just ripping out Chariots all the time. I mean they have speed, are effective at taking out Axemen and are cheap. Spearmen may kill them easily, but the reality of killing them with Spearmen would be different (2mp vs. 1mp, for instance). I guess the Chariots ONLY seem to be good at taking out Axemen and moving around though.

                  This is really interesting...

Chariots only get two movement points inside your territory - less depending on terrain type. Spearmen can get two if you've got a good road network. So chariots don't have much use inside an enemies territory except as cover for a stack against axemen which protect the chariot against the spearmen.

Edit: unless someone insists on continuing to use the (now defunct) strategy of only defending cities and resources with axemen.

What can the Horse Archers do that the Chariots cannot? I still don't see a reason why they should be made. Twice as expensive, and they perform a job that something else can do at half the price.

edit: I guess the fact that they are generally stronger, but is that worthy of paying twice as much PLUS spending the extra research to get them?

Chariots are only good vs. Axemen. Any proper attacker will have a mixed force. Chariots can't attack a stack that has Spearmen, Swordsmen or Horse Archers successfully.

In enemy territory, chariots get 2mp, but so do the defender's Spearmen, with roads, so...

I always felt that horse archers were too weak in the Vanilla game for a 50 hammer unit, and the additional nerf will weaken them further.

Does anyone else think that the Cossack change was an overnerf? For a fairly late unit, it now has a pretty minor boost compared to normal cavalry.

                            Two questions:

                            1) What are the exact properties of the Pavilion. Culture points and a culture percentage boost or just a percentage boost?

                            2) Do any traits (expansive or aggresive) give a production bonus to building the stable?

Thanks Solver and Thedrin for clarifying that Makes sense. I guess the Chariots strength pretty much makes it useless at anything else but Axemen. Cool. I guess the extra strength the Horse Archers have allows it to be decent pillagers too - especially the Keshiks.

Now that the Chariots are counters to Axemen, doesn't that reduce the effectiveness of the Numidian Cavalry?
