  • Cottage won't upgrade

    Hi,

I suspect this gets asked often, but I found no references to it on this website. My apologies if this has been asked dozens of times before.

When I build a Cottage it is supposed to upgrade to a Hamlet it 10 turns. However, often times if I scroll over it, I'll see something alongs the lines of "City needs to work in order to grow."

What exactly is "working" for a city? And how do I make that happen?

    Thanks

the city has to work the tile on which the cottage is on. in other words: in the city-screen there must be a white circle on the tile with the cottage

Exactly. You have to assign a workforce (the small icons in the city screen) to the cottage tile.

A tip: completely industrializing your civ (e.g. building improvements on every piece of land) is not always such a smart thing to do, especially with low growth. Keep some forests and jungles if you can to make the population happier and healthier, and then switch to enviromentalism for uber-domination.

I will always keep 2-3 a city forests for the health bonus. Also so I can make lumbermills and later with Enviromentalism the happiness bonus. I also keep them incase I am in a race for a wonder and I find out someone else isahesd of me I will get max production out of the city and if that still isn't enough I will cut down a forest.

Make sure the forests you leave aren't adjacent to your city if you can help it. Don't want any enemy forces that are laying siege to have a nice defencive position to do it from.

Excellent, thank you. Should have realized that in the first place.

Jungles are bad to keep for that long, esp. given their minuses. Just keep forests in groups of 3. I tend to keep my forests unless there is a much better reason of chopping them down - I am not a fan of chop rushing. I much prefer pop rushing.

                  I learned yet another lesson

So I guess thats why when having no forest I often see a sickly green looking ICON when viewing cities within Map?

                  Thanks

Indeed, though there are other ways to deal with that Particularly building granary/aqueduct/grocer, and building cities on rivers, and grabbing plenty of food resources

Yeah, but the other additions of 1.61 made it worth it.

I almost never have that problem (huge marathon continents @ noble). That's what I get for playing as Rome all the time.

Just have to keep an eye on it with my globe theater city.
