The trick is to stop the barbarians before they get to you, or prevent them from even showing up. Just build a few military units as you grow your city (like when you are trying to build up it's population before making workers/settlers), and send all but one of them out on 'sentry duty' around your city, in areas near unexplored areas. Barbarians will only spawn when you can't see them, so if you park a few archers on hilltops outside your borders, you'll reduce the space they have to spawn, and when they do show up you can usually get them to attack your units in terrain that is advantageous to you. Don't be afraid to lose a unit here and there, too, if you reload every time you lose a battle you'll get sick of playing and want to start over. Likewise, having an improvement pillaged is not the end of the game - it happens to the AI too so your probably not losing because of it. Learn to fight, even if it's only defensively, and learn how to take a blow and rebuild. Units are cheap, and you get a certain number maintenance free, so build them.

I've heard someone tell a newbie player trying to break their builder habits to build a military unit after every building you build - since they are a lot cheaper than buildings usually you'll still spend most of your production on building, but you can be sure to have enough spare units that you can easily absorb a barbarian or AI attack.

Another advantage of having all the units is that it makes AI civilizations less likely to declare war on you. Even the most aggressive AI is unlikely to start a war with you if your power rating is 150% of theirs. It really helps with diplomacy.

yeah i tried that. spawned out some early warriors to guard the hills nearby. noticed that most of the barbs dont attack for the first two thousand years or so. the nthey come indroves., by that stage i have two long a border to protect as to keep the barbs out need to have every sqaure covered as they keep walking around my defenders and entering ym city radius.

Are you playing maps with less than the recomended number of AI civilizations? That can increase the number of barbarians.

Try playing a higher difficulty with the barbarians turned off, you might enjoy that as it gives you more time to build up before you get invaded - hardly anyone gets invaded in the first 3000 years on Noble.

If you have Warlords, build/chop out the Great Wall. Then expand as you want. Industrious/Protective might suit you.

Get Chariots, too. Those things, especially now with the bonus against axemen, are barb killing machines at least until swordsmen show up. Then use your own axemen on those guys.

Chopping means using your forests to build stuff, as you get a lump sum of shields when they are chopped down.

so instead of using workers t obuidl roads and farms and cottages, you guys just chop ofrrests around your cities ?

Yes, but it does mean you don't get the health benefits and production benefits of those forests either. It's a stategic choice that doesn't really matter on the lowest difficulty levels, just like nothing really matters on those levels.
We do use our workers to built roads, farms en cottages also btw.

I think the other problem i make for myself, i s my desire for an empire means lots of cities, and from what i can gather that isnt good in civ4. i see some games people only have 10 citiys. I would be bored with so few. Till i get over the 20+ mark for number of cities i dont feel like i have made an empire.

You can have 20, but you can't just spam 20 from the start.
