  • Some directions and tips needed

    Hello everyone. I'm pretty new to Civ4, and therefore need some tips on the way;

    1) Is it a way to get rid of the pollution in cities? Even in one of my early cities I have +7 sick faces from pollution. Is it anything I can research or build to reduce the pollution?

    2) When I was playing a multiplayer game (hotseat) with my brother and some AI opponents, some of the AI's discovered the religion Buddhism. How can I get that religion to spread to mine country fastest possible? Do I have to research the technology that enables the religion? (first who discover this and that, gets for example Buddhism), or is it other things I can do, to get the religion to spread to my country, so I can have it as state religion.

    3) In the same multiplayer game as mentioned above, the camera view gets resetted to perspective high above the map every time its my turn, even if I zoom in when I start my turn, the camera has been resetted to that view far above the map. My hotseat-mate does not have the same problem.

    4) When I choose a civic it says for example "High upkeep", but when I hold the mouse over it, it says that it costs 0 gold per day. I tested these but choosing a civic with "Low upkeep" (should cost some gold at least), but it never costed my anything to have it deployed. What is going on?

This was the things I needed to get straight. Hope that somebody can give me some directions, so I can enjoy Civ4 even more.

    1. That's unhelathiness, not pollution. You get rid of it by hooking up health resources (food - pigs, wheat, corn, sheep, rice, etc.), and by building Aqueducts when you get the Construction tech. Cities built on a river or on a freshwater lake have a health bonus of +2.

Mind you, 7 sick faces do NOT matter. What matters is that you do not have more sick faces then healthy faces. 7 sick faces and 8 healthy faces = city OK. 7 sick 7 healthy = city OK. 7 sick 6 healthy = city has unhealthiness of 1.

    2. If you research Meditation first, you found Buddhism. If it has already be founded, such as your game, the tech won't give you anything Buddhism-related. You don't really have control over how the religion spreads.

    3. Weird.

    4. Your civ is probably still too small. "High" or "low" upkeep isn't any fixed amount of gold. As your civilization expands, the costs will increase. For "high upkeep" civics, they will obviously increase more.

Edit: Solver covered it all far more succinctly than I have.

      1) Unhealthiness is caused by
      a) population - as the number of citizens in the city increases so does the polution
      b) terrain - for every flood plain and jungle in a city's fat cross the city recieves 0.4 unhealthiness
      c) buildings - such as the forge, factory and coal plant.

      Reduce unhappiness by:
      a) Obtaining resources - most food resources provide healthiness, e.g. corn, wheat and rice each give 1 health to a city that has acces to them.
      b) Buildings - most healthiness resources (and some happiness resources) can give an extra health to a city if the required building is present, e.g. the granary gives 1 health for each of corn, wheat and rice that a city has access to.
      c) Buildings again - some buildings have the specific purpose of reducing unhealthy faces or increasing healthy faces. Examples are the aqueduct and the recycling center.
      d) Terrain - for every forest in a cities fat cross you get 0.5 healthy faces. You get 2 healthy faces for having your city on a river or a fresh water lake.

      2) You don't need the technology that grants the religion to have a religion spread to your civilization. You can only increase the likelihood of religion spreading to your civiliqation by:
      a) Open borders with a civ with a Buddhist city,
      b) A road, river or coastal connection to the Buddhist city.
The effort may not be worth it. If you're near a civ with a religion it'll probably spread to yuo eventually.

      3) I have that exact problem with hot seat games. I don't know what's wrong.

      4) You won't see any change in the 0 gold per turn by moving the mouse over the civic. You have to select the civic to see the change.

I checked it now, and it said +7 from pollution, that equals 7 total unhealthiness, so it is pollution.

Yeah. Very weird and annoying. Guess I'll have to wait for another patch. Any news on when it is coming?

For the other answers you gave me; thanks. It really cleared up some stuff for me.

Since we are two with the same problem, it is probably a bug or something. Always nice to not be alone with the problems. :P

EDIT: I found something about this problem on another thread. I quote: "I don't know what your problem is there. Maybe its because every turn your scouts discover a large chunk of land and the camera has to resize itself. Thats my best answer. The same thing happens to me when I have several scouts about."

I will definately try that out after work tomorrow (today actually), and see if it helps. You should try it you to, and see if it fixes the issue.

Well, I remeber it happening even after I'd stopped exploring the land - but it's been a long time since I last played a hot seat game so that could be it.

Uh, pollution only appears in the Industrial Age. Did you build Factories or somesuch? Anyway, you get rid of that by building Recycling Centers later.

The camera issue sure is weird... sorry, I don't have any fix in mind for now.

I was quite curious to this, so I tested it right now. Same camera problem also after I deleted all of my explorer units.

Are you sure it doesn't say population?

                        3) have you built stonehenge or discovered calender? They reset the camera and in my pbem it resets at the start of every turn as I have built stonehenge

Could you get unhealthness from population? I thought you only get unhappiness from too many people.

Yes, it works almost the same way as unhappiness.

By the way where did you think all those unhealthiness points came from if not from population?
