I rather think that tech trading is an advantage on Emperor. It may sometimes mean that you almost give away some techs but as long as you get to Alphabet first you should be able to control the tech trading to your advantage and can bee-line to your hearts content while hoarding rare techs for yourself and just trade those which are more widely known.

There are tech trading strategies that are almost always beneficial to the human-civ.

Rather I think tech-trading is almost a must on Deity level – though not sure if it is crucial at Immortal level

No Tech Trading is a disadvantage at the higher difficulties, definitely.

            Here is a few.

play on HUB, turn off tech trade, its just boring anyway

Let your first city grow a bit, choose techs that help you build your land if possible.

beelining, is not very important, but if you want wonders, think ahead.

The isthmus is where the action is, barbarian cities might be up for grabs, get your axes with city attack ready.

            Hope this helps

            PS
Avoid sucky starts..sad thing about civ is that a bad start will just kill you early on.
Turns are taken rapidly in the beginning, small bonuses make BIG diffrences, later in the game, it doesn't matter as much.
