Have never done so, pretty much for the same reasons everyone had already posted.

The larger the civ, the higher the GA value, and the later in the game, the more worthless the alternatives of settling and lightbulbing become. If I'm trying to build a spaceship, there's absolutely nothing a GP can do for me that is better than speeding up that spaceship for eight turns. Tech burning is unlikely to shave more than a single turn off an SS tech. That's less than peanuts compare to getting Metal Casting or Civil Service from a GP in the early game, and the damn thing cost nearly 30 times as much to incubate.

There tend to be long stretches in the game where there aren't any very useful wonders to build - just things like Angkor Wat, Sistine Chapel, Chichen Itza, et al. In those eras it's nice to use GE + artist/prophet on a golden age if you don't like the techs they give.

Eh, it's alright if you have a large empire and Mercantilism, I suppose, but how many gold are you getting from it? Maybe twenty or thirty at very very most and with Mercantilism a lot of those gold are in cities which aren't commerce cities.

I can't really see how it would be worth using a Great Engineer on.

I think we're talking about different wonders. Angkor Wat: makes priests specialists more powerful than engineer specialists.

Check out the Great Profit thread if in any doubt of the value of Angkor Wat.

With one Great merchant Mission you can upgrade all your knights and buy them a drink too. Much less tedious also.

: I find it silly that GP's are required to start Golden Ages anyway. Can't we just start Golden Ages like in civ 3? For example, Playing as Zulu, if one of your "Units become Elite" as well as your people well looked after, that would trigger a Golden Age.

:This way of triggering Golden Ages was much more interesting and time saving. I mean wasting two or more GP'S isnt worth a Golden Age since they could be used for better tasks e.g= Tech Discovering or "Religious Great Building".

I usally find something better to do with great people. Unless it's a great prophet and I don't need the tech.
