alright then so gneeral consencus is go to 1 Gig of Memory.

I installed the patch and whilst it does seem to improve a lot of speed issues still too many slow downs.

I hate small maps as my main thing is to build an empire not goto war.

i usually select huge maps and few AI usually about 4 of them ( on Settler level !!!)

Last game i palyed the Barabarians ended up with more citys than AI ....

but the hidden continent wsnt discovere dfor many years andthe Barbs just kept filling it up

Although jsut started a game at chiefton level and am ahead in points by about 1000, not sure i will win though, surrounded by AI on a pangea map and whilst i am ahead techology wise, i not sure i can build a big enough army to take them all on. i know once i strike at one the others will turn on me..

Well maybe you don't need to take them all on. Or if you do bribe some to help you take the first couple.

Build a bigger military then... Or don't bother with military tactics to win, go ahead and go for space race.

Seriously though ... play the religion game. Specifically, either get an early religion and convert a couple of AIs to your side, or let one of the early AI religion getters convert you. Being of the same religion as neighboring AIs is very helpful for relations. If you share religion with half of your neighbors, for example, you can usually count on several of them staying allied with you for the entire game...

Also, occasionaly give them a tech when they ask, particularly if it's a tech that's already owned by several AIs. They'll love you for it later on

how do i do that.. wheneevr i go to diplmacy screen the option of attacking another ai is in red and wont allow me to select it as a tradable option

No i have the space race turned off as i find that rather boring.

I find that early military has little effect even losing to barbarians often, so never go on attack till late in game when i need to grab land space to win domination victory.

i am finding on the new level , chieften, that i am still ahead in tech but ovrall size of nations is roughly equal, only 1000pts score lead, and i worry that if i attack one AI the others combined (11 nations all up) will join against me...

Ras, if you make friends with some of them, and have a significant + with not much - in relations with them, they'll join your side... I've asked many AI to join into wars with me at much higher levels than chieftain It just requires making them your friends ahead of time (as in thousands of years ahead of time). That, and they have to have a reason to want to do it

Have you tried alt+tab when the game starts to become slow?

On my computer the game can become slow at any time, but alt-tabbing out of the game, then in again, makes the game run great again

I've got 1GB ram. The game runs well (except for the occasionally slowdowns) on large maps, with everything set on high/AA on

I have an Athlon64 3000 with 1.5 GB of RAM and a 128MB Geforce 5900 card. The game ran pretty well for me up until I installed the newest nVidia drivers for the card. Since then, I've only been playing on small to normal-sized maps. I can't justify switching my driver just to play the dang game.
