  • Declaring War Error

There is something screwy going on in my game. I end my turn and while "waiting for other civilizations" Isabel declares war on me. Only the game says that I declare war on her and all of my defensive alliances are canceled.

This has happened before, but I didn't catch on as to what is happening. Any ideas?

I think if you have a defensive pact with civilization A and civilization B attacks A, then you automatically declare war on B and your pacts are cancelled. (I am not totally sure as I do not use alliances.) Check your log for declarations of Isabella immediately to someone else.

That is correct. The defensive pacts only guarantee that your allies will declare war on your attacker. They do nothing beyond that.

As long as your allies are at war with Spain, everything worked as it was supposed to

So, if Isabel were to attack someone I have a defensive pact with, then I automatically declare war on Isabel. Then all of my other defensive pacts get canceled because I declared war (because Isabel declared war on someone else)?

It sounds convoluted because...it is, but that's how I understand the system to work.

I believe it's designed that way to avoid AI exploits
