  • Annoyingly non-serious leader texts - any solution?

    Dear Fellow users,

While I admire the gameplay, graphics etc. of Civ4, there is one factor that completely hinders my immersion: the supposedly "funny" leader texts. I don't enjoy commanding legions and building vast towns, when another supposedly great emperor greets me by making a completely silly and pointless remark about her stomach or his sandals. I miss the days when I was addressed as "Grossadmiral Shunter" and I could sign a Pact both for the benefit of Planet and the benefit of my "peacekeeping efforts". (Alpha Centauri, anyone...?)

I scoured the Net for some mod to address this issue, but the best I found was ActualQuotes.

Is there anyone else annoyed by these misfired bits of humor, and does anyone know a possible solution (other than abandoning Civ4 altogether, and modifying all the text files, thank you.)

    Regards,
    SA

i think the best solution would be creating a mod with all of the text files changed, i know you dont want to do this, but someone might

and abandoning cIV is a little drastic, kind of akin to commiting suicide dont ya think?

I feel the same way, the comments are just too "out of place", but I have lived to learn with it... or to be more precise: I just completely ignore what they say

Played since I posted that. Phew. ActualQuotes does leverage the problem a bit, and I also learnt to ignore their comments. Maybe next Civ will be a bit more "serious" (I have a very similar gripe with Galactic Civilizations 2 if someone plays that as well). I'll have to live with this, as Civ4 withdrawal symptoms are said to be much worse, as wardhali hinted...

I don't think you can reasonably expect the next game to be more serious... ever since Civ1, Civ games had this characteristic of appearing not to take themselves very seriously. GalCiv2 is even less serious, though, in my opinion - I still enjoy the style of both.

            Exactly!

I love the game texts as is.

Over-compensation for the pompous, stilted bombast of Civ2 diplomacy.

To be honest I don't really admire some of the American college student-level humour, but I can appreciate the subtler and less vulgar humour in the game.

There's not a lot of vulgar humour in the game, if I remember correctly. Much of it is somewhat subtle, and a fair bit is just, well, funny. And I do not find the "American college student level" humour funny .

Quite true. I love the humourous touches in the game as well .

I don't mind the humorous touch the game has, it's just that the leader comments get really boring after reading them for the 10th time

There are people who don't like the nonserious part of the game? I think such things are great and adds flavour to the game! I'm very glad it made the public release, it fits well for a game like Civ.

I am sure you can mod these texts out. Don't ask me how, I'm just ignoring them, but it should be not hard. Ask in the creation forum, they know it. Perhaps there is already a "Civ Statesman" mod out, wouldn't surprise me.

I'd guess it is in some XML file. Everything and it's grandmother seems to be there in this game.

i dont have anything against the funny dialogue, but it seems too general, too universal, not specific to the game very much...

i would defenately download a mod that gives the AI a unique dialogue that plays offthe character that the AI posseses, such as tokugawa (Japan) says something like "cant this wait, i'm a very busy ruler?" obviosly you would come up with something more crative to play off of his isolationist persona, but thats for the modmakers,

the mod would (i think) be very simple, as it does not change a gameplay dynamic, it would just be kind of time consuming.

the dialogue could be serious, funny or a mixture, it would all work for me.

I love the non-serious bits as well. For example, when Nimoy goes "Blip, blip, blip."
