Don't forget that starting with Drill II lets you go straight to Drill III with Barracks or certain civic choices, and Drill III units can be very tough. Someone mentioned once that there is another promotion that Drill II is the prerequisite for that's pretty good, but I forgot what promotion that was.

Using Churchill (Charismatic/Protective, I believe) barracks trained units can go straight to Drill IV.

A quick glance at the promotions tree (which is therefore a fallible glance) shows that Drill III only leads to Drill IV and that the Drill promotions are an isolated section of the promotions tree.

Didn't Drill II let you get the Accuracy promotion on artillery units at one point?

Solver made the case that those drill III and IV archers you have tucked away can upgrade into deadly drill III and IV riflemen, which is admittedly, a very good point.

Early Drill III crossbowmen (especially Cho-Ko-Nus!) could be quite deadly as well.

Churchill is looking very appealing as a leader to use right about now.

Yep, on top of that, while I've never played far enough into the game with Elizabeth or Victoria, I believe that the Drill IV longbowmen can be upgraded to Drill IV Redcoats.

Those will be excellent, though I keep expecting the developers to patch out the ability to retain promotions which the new unit normally couldn't have when upgrading - if I play aggressively I always end up with City Raider III or IV on a lot of my Grenadiers, and they are really too good for their era.

I really hope that they do not do that. One of my favorite role-playing aspects of Civ4 is developing and naming some elite units and watching the survivors kick butt with a variety of weapons and upgrades.

I did not think of the drill 1 and drill 2 upgrades carrying over to riflemen and later on, infantry. Perhaps the protective ability may be worthwhile after all. Of course, walls and castles go completely obsolete are next to useless by the adoption of gunpowder (except for the +1 culture of a castle).

Also, remember guys that machine guns units are considered "artillery" by the game - so you get the drill upgrades for them too - making you very well defended.

Yes, that's correct. All archery units, melee units and musketmen can be upgraded to riflemen.

Uh, seige weapons with automatic drill II is quite nasty, esp. if you have something else to upgrade them (barricks, west point). That also means I get to put them city defender I (+20%) and drill II archers in cities, or ones with guerilla and drill II along the ridge of hills over there.

                          Quite nice, really.
