For some reason, when I generate a map using Smart Map, it has one or sometimes even two civilizations start right next to me. That sucks -- what do I need to do to increase starting distance between civilizations?

I hadn't noticed this happening in my games with Smartmap. The issue of increasing the starting distance was discussed in this thread, but that presumably involved non-Smartmaps.

You might want to post this issue in the Smartmap thread.

By the way, with Smartmap starts, I have found that I begin with three technologies on Warlord now, instead of only two, and the civilization I'm playing (Rome) didn't even start with Agriculture as one of them.

          Anyone know why this is?

What, you're still playing on Warlord?

Rome usally begins with fishing and mining not agriculture.

Odd... I just don't seem to have this problem. I start new games all the time (I rarely finish my games) and about 50% I get a really nice start, maybe 30% of the time I get an ok start, and 20% the start is weak.

And I've got pretty high standards.

                    You can also try WorldPainter.

It has very delicate control over every variable of map generation.
