I just finished a smart map game set at 240x120 and it ran okay (just a little slow in the modern era). The map creation took 6 minutes to load. I just tried creating a 360x180 map and got nothing after 45 minutes of waiting (the machine didn't hang though). What would be a good map size to try with my 4G of RAM?

I definitely agree with making the video card my first upgrade (as soon as I can spare the change).
