While playing a marathon length game I became bored with the modern era music so decided to go to options and listen to some rennaisance music again since this is more to my taste. I pointed to the correct folder in 'soundtrack ' containing the files but no music appeared in the game. I then copied the folder out of Civ IV onto my C: drive and even tried renaming it with no success. What am I doing wrong ?

I agree about the modern era music. Yuck. I have added some Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and even some of the music from CivIII.

The way I've modded music is to go into the XML files themselves and define new songs for a particluar era. If you choose to do it this way, here are the files you'll need to customize:

Assets/XML/GameInfo/CIV4EraInfos.xml (this is where you define what music plays in what era)

    Assets/XML/Audio/Audio2DScripts.xml

    Assets/XML/Audio/AudioDefines.xml

Put the music file (it MUST be an MP3 file) in the appropriate era's directory within Assets/Sounds/Soundtrack

This will make the new songs play just as if they were included with the program out of the box, you won't have to select any options in-game.

Yeah, OK: "The People are the Heroes" is a pretty catchy tune. It's my favorite out-of-the-box Modern era song.

I too was intrigued by "The People Are Heroes" and googled it. Apparently it's from the opera 'Nixon in China', as are some of the other modern era pieces. Apologies if this is common knowledge.

I actually don't mind the modern era music so much. When I'm in the middle of a tight space race or something I feel like it heightens the dramatic tension.

The modern era music might be bad, but it's NOTHING compared to Civ 3's modern music [shiver].

It's originally from Chairman Mao's poem, I seem to recall.

                Modern musics are great.
I've allways wanted to play "Russ Meyer's Civilization"

I think the game music is integral to the feel of Civ IV. I wouldn't choose to listen to other music during gameplay.
