While the difficulty of the battle has some effect, it's really not the reason why you're having trouble. As a rule, units can't get more than 10xp from fighting barbarian units. When fighting animals, the limit is 5xp. Above that, they just get nothing

yimboli, religious shrine income is gold (not commerce), which wall street affects. It has a different icon, stacks of gold coins, starting with version 1.52, while the commerce icon is a single coin showing face on. Similarly, spiral minaret is also gold income. Gold income is a powerful tool to allow you to set your research higher. You ideally want your wall street in your (highest yield) shrine city.

Jaybe, thanks. That answered a nagging question, but poses another one =P

The following seems intuitive in light of the distinction between gold and commerce, but I'd like to verify with an expert: with 80% science rate and no drama, a 10 commerce city yields 8 beakers and 2 gold? is that accurate? thus wall street would make that 2 a 4? which stresses why wall street should go with a shrine and/or oxford?

ALSO just thought of something - if you place both national epic and globe theatre in the same city to synergize, aren't you limiting that city's GPP specialization? both NE and GT make great artist points, so if you want to specialize that city into any other GP Pump, it'll be diluted with artists... therefore, NE and GT almost exclusively make good GA pumps and nothing else?

              .

If you reallly go heavy into making gpp (which I only ever do if I start near stone and get pyramids), then the gpp points from your buildings mean almost nothing towards your gpp generation.

If you go all the way (representation/caste system/mercantilism/pacifism hopefully with parthenon) towards making lots of gpp, those little bits from the buildings are such a small fraction of your gpp points that you'll never get those specialists.

Each science specialist in that setup would generate +6 research and +9 gpp.
You'd have one free specialist in every city, and you can make 6-7 more specialists in a city (up to 20+ specialists in a late game farming city.

In the mid-early game (if you got pyramids), and you beeline to philosophy for confucianism and pacifism, you could easily have 7 plus 1 free plus 2 more free (if you made great library) scientists for 60 research and 90 gpp points each turn from 1 city!
When you get globe theatre and national epic, things get crazy - that 9 gpp per specialist jumps even higher.

Note that you can easily do this for scientists, artists, priests, or merchants.
You can't do this for engineers though, since caste system doesn't allow for extra engineers.
