By the midgame, I've captured so many workers, the thought of directing them all manually is not pleasant.
And I agree with all those that it's nice to have roads to handle any invaders.

In my experience, I don't need to worry about invaders until they are threatening the tiles worked by my cities or the odd resource left outside of the border of a city. Therefore, for me at least, I only need roads within my city borders and to connect my resources and cities.

I spam roads when my workers don't have anything else to do. Aside from protecting against the loss of connectedness due to the loss of a single road tile, the main reason is to make sure that if any new resource shows up later, it is already connected and just needs to be improved to get the resource, rather than having to improve and connect. Yeah forgot about that one. Yes it is nice when it's already connected. Even better when that copper/iron pops next to your cap underneath an existing mine.

I don't spam roads. Since I am only playing at Noble, it is one of the house rules I use to limit myself (aside from easthetic issues).
For a while another house rule was to use "units auto promote," but I am over that (for now). It was occasionally TOO limiting/frustrating seeing the AI get an occasional medic but I never got any.
I'd probably go for a domination victory on that type of map. I've only played that type of map once, in fact. I didn't get a domination, but I carved out a pretty good space for myself. I don't like being raped on all sides by the AI. While this game isn't as bad as civ3 in that regard, there are times when I'm attacked by more than one AI at a time. I try to not put myself in that position.
I actually put roads everywhere. One of my freinds said that's how he knew it when he found me. Roads, roads, and more roads. roads are just cool, and bridges...ah, that's the life. I think it looks quite pretty.
And, as it was stated earlier, I too find it useful when someone drops off a bunch of units on the othr end of my territory and i need to send units to tile. roads everywhere really helps.
(I never really checked this out, but one of the r4easons for the USA's extensive road network was to move troops around at ease. I lived in norfolk, VA for a long time and that place has more roads then it knows what to do with (the tunnels aside).)
I lived in Norfolk, it didn't seem to have that many roads. Maybe I never noticed...
We have more roads out west. Because we have more traffic. But that is because we live in an automobile based society. when have we ever needed to move troops around? That would have been done by train, and later by air.
Back east there are many small highways, but that is because there are many small towns.
In my city there are only 4 major ways into and out of town (there are a couple minor ones like the road to pahrump and lake mead area).
No one gets deep inside my land. By that point in the game, I've kicked everyone off my continent. Manifest Destiny.

You are right - it does not have many main roads. It does not have any Motorways either. Although some are near its' borders.
You can get to London (Capitol) in under 2 hours. But if you try to go to the Midlands or tothe North of the country, the roads are so unbelievably bad.
Example:
Drive London to Blackpool [northwest England] - (4 or 5 hours) if keeping to speed limits {nearly all motorway}.
London to Norwich [Norfolk] - (2 or 3 hours) {some motorway outside of Norfolk}.
Norwich to Blackpool - (7 or 8 hours) {mostly on minor roads until reaching the Midlands of England}.
Sounds reasonable except:
Norwich is 120 miles [approx] North East Of London and Blackpool is 250 miles [approx] North West of London.
So with a proper road system, as in the rest of England Norwich Blackpool should take (3 or 4 hours) not (7 or 8).
Sounds daft but, it is nearly quicker to drive over 100 miles in the wrong direction to join the Motorway system - in order to get to the north of England from Norfolk.

The United States national highway system was initially developed (that is, prioritized) to provide for rapid movement of troops. Couldn't depend on the rail system to have the enough of the proper rolling stock at the right place & time.
Roads, while more expensive to move on than rails, are much more convenient & flexible.
