it's just ugly, I can't stand it. No automation for me.

sometimes when I play an earth map, I'll try to put cities and highways in their appropiate positions. kind of pathetic.

EXACTLY! I'm glad someone gets it. I hate how my empire doesn't look the same.

I don't need the automation to build road everywhere, I build roads everywhere manually .
          Why?
It's very simple, for killing marauding units, when they're on a road you can kill them then move away. It's a lot cleaner than not having roads.

Also when you actually look at a map of a real world country you'll see there are really roads everywhere, going in all directions. Only mountain ranges break up the web of roads.

I actually thought this thread might be about the barbarians pillaging roads. That both annoys and amuses me. I always imagine the barbarians roaring "GROG HATE ROADS!" while digging them up and planting grass and flowers. Flippin' eco-terrorists.

Say what you will about not automating workers, it gets tedious eventually and you reach a point where you say "screw it, I don't want to manage my city production, move my units around, AND thoughtfully use my workers strictly toward specific purpose. At some point I just say screw it and do whatever I want with them...when I get to that phase, I may as well just automate them.

I don't see why the ability to pillage roads was taken out for Civ4. I would love to see it added back in with a future patch but I think that is wishful thinking. Plus, I'm probably in the minority as made apparent by this thread.

                  Uh? Who cares?

Roads everywhere! Then later, railways everywhere!

                    RTFT (read the fine thread).

You can break a road with a ground unit.

You can't break a road that's inside your own cultural borders. I've noticed this before. Road spam inside my newly expanded borders is ugly.

You definitely can, unless they changed it with patch 1.61.

I have never tried, because what good would it do? But I know that the button to do so it lit even inside my own borders.

Just did a check on my latest game (version 1.61). Sent an axeman out of a city onto a mined roaded hill square. The axeman pillaged the mine. Next I sent out a spearman. He had no option to pillage the remaining road. I waited till the next turn. Still no option to pillage.

I can't say for certain but I'm fairly sure that I noted this in version 1.52. It was definetly long enough ago that I will rule out it changing to this way in 1.61.

                            Summary:

                            1) You can pillage non road improvements inside your own cultural borders (not sure about railways).
                            2) You can't pillage roads inside your own cultural borders.
                            3) Road spam is ugly.

I still disagree strongly with 3). As soon as the most important tasks are done, I always fill up the remaining with roads.

                                I'm with Blake and Nikolai...

Roads are for moving quickly. There's a lotta reasons to move from plot to plot that don't involve transfer...

In the early game, you build roads lengthwise along rivers to maximise the chance of getting across on your last move point.

It's cool to destroy a single opponent then retreat back to your stack, or more defensible ground...

                                They look cool...

The only time I willingly pillate roads is when taking a late town with a light force.

You bomb a plot 2 squares from your stack or captured city back to rail/road only, send a Chopper out, pillage the road then move back one square.

The worst the bad guy can do is kill your choppers, but if he's using tanks he'll get worse than he gives.
