Just empty it out and leave it for the barbs. Then you can get money for razing it later.

I just saw that there are a abandon city mod out here(files section of civilization4.net), but that one can't be used with a current game I think.

You can't use newly installed mods with existing saved games.

Yup. You can start new games with them. Just remember to load the mods first

Just withdraw your units from it, then go into the Worldbuilder and put a barbarian unit in the city. The city will then automatically change into a barb city, so you can use your units in the next turn and raze it. I've done this so many times I can't even tell you.

Abrogating personal responsibility!
A shameful trend in culture these days.
Several times (less than once per game) I have taken a city and realized it would have been better to raze it. I consider the choice to be part of the challenge.
But then again, I'm only playing at Noble (some expenses modified to Monarch through xml).
I wonder if ancient generals had to deal with such difficult issues when razing cities. .
It's kind of sad that it's so easy to raze a city, but they can't put a nuke in the game worth a damn that can obliterate cities. Don't they know nuking cities is fun?

Well if you are resorting to the WB, you can just erase the city. No fuss, no mess.
