Saladin converted to Islam, despite the fact that he didn't found it, and doesn't have any cities with Islam. (I know because the only cities that do are 2 of mine) Are any other civilizations as stupid as him or is he the only one? Who else does this?

That isn't even possible. You can only pick your state religion to be Islam if you have Islam in one of your cities - hence, Saladin here must have at least on Islamic city.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

You need open borders for auto spread to happen? Are you sure about that?Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God? - Epicurus

Religion spreads through "Trade connections", that is, religion can spread to cities that the holy city at least would have the option of having trade routes with.
However there is no need to actually have open borders or open trade. Case in point, Tokugawa always ends up with religion even if he doesn't found one.

From what I knew you create a monestary and send it to a city, or if you build that wonder with the great prophet it does. However I didn't have open boarders with Saladin, and never have.Originally posted by dearmad
Dou you have ANY idea how reliigon is spread- your posts indicate you don't.

If you have trade with someone (the little yellow triangle of arrows next to their name on the main screen) then a religion can spread either way. A newly founded city without a religion will grab one (and often seems to get a minor religion rather than an established one). Simple as that.Never give an AI an even break.

It seems more like spreading of religion is very random, as I often end up spreading my religion to a civ I've never met. Sometimes that civ is located on a different continent, and the spreading can happen before anybody gets close to discovering caravelsOriginally posted by Kuciwalker
Religion spreads through trade routes, trade routes require open borders. This space is empty... or is it?

You don't send monestaries to cities (they are buildings, you knowOriginally posted by Qwertqwert

) , you send missionaries that can be built with monesteries or under org.religion civic.
You don't need a shrine (that great prophet wonder) in order to spread religion without missionaries, it just speeds up the spreading.
Religions spread passively via trade routes, but it is random and it can spread only to those cities that do NOT have a religion. With missionaries you can pinpoint the spread to specific city and the target city can have a religion / religions already.Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici
