Does anyone else have this problem? A couple times now I've been the first to discover Music/Economics/Physics, and I did not get the free Great Person for discovering that. And I know I am the first because I checked and nobody had it before me, and then everyone needed it after I discovered it (or were not that advanced yet). So, is this just a glich in the system?- although it's happened more than once which bothers me.

Last night was the first time I was the first to discover Music and I did get a Great Artist. It took me two turns to realise that's what happened because the city then produced a Great Prophet and I wondered why I got two GP so quickly.
IOW, there's absolutly no fanfare or notice that you are getting a free GP. It simply appears in some city and looks as if he city itself generated a new GP. I wish they would present it to you like they do wonders or something. Find some way to tie it to the discovery.
Or... you may have found a bug and if you can get a save game of it and send it to Firaxis they will have a better chance of finding it and fixing it.

I have yet to not get the free great person when I am first. I have missed it by one turn before though. I pretty much always go for music first to get the GA and bump a recently aquired city or a strategicly located newly founded one.
Are you sure you know all the civs yet? There could be one that you have not seen yet that got to music first. It won't tell you about one that you don't know about.

I think it is likely that someone else has got there first but that you simply have not met that civilisation yet. One way to know for certain is to watch for the “Homer has been born in a far off land”.message. That’s a near certainty that Music has been discovered since the only source of Great Artist points before music are through theatres and the two “Epic” wonders which you get from techs just one before Music.
Wonders actually come with a big fanfare but you still get the message that “So-and-so has completed the X wonder”. In the same way, when you get a Great Person, you’ll see the “X has been born in Y” but here you need to pay attention to the fact that Y is YOUR city. One other thing that you should notice is that the GP should, at some point during your turn, appear with all their options. So my guess is that you’re playing a little too fast and missing these things

Go into the log and look. They are all year stamped so you should be able to see who was first since I agree that the first great artist is usually from the first to music. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

I just found Isabelle use a Great Artist to good effect yesterday. My shrine city had just expanded so that the cultural reach had got to Salamanca, a pitiful city of hers with almost no growth and one that had just started to get its own culture – Novgorod was knocking out 14+ culture per turn and the Spanish control of the Salamanca tile had fallen to 30%!!
Up popped a GA and the next thing I know my workers, who were just about to Pasteurise some cattle within the Salamanca fat cross, were thrown back two spaces as the local culture giant in the region suddenly switched from my 800pt Novgorod to a 6000pt Salamanca.
It never rains but it pours as I found out soon enough when my Roman city border, that were steadily winning the culture war over Pisa when suddenly I lost two square to a Pisa border expansion. I only realised this when I noticed that I had some health problems and found that they had taken my sheep. Baaaaaah!!

I know how great people work with just popping up in a city. And the turn that I had discovered Musik, I didn't give birth to anyone, anywhere. And I have missed discovering a technology first, as that happened in the same game with Economics. Russia got it two turns before me. But, for Musik- the only thing I can think is either a glich or that Germany got it first. Cuz I did a large map and there are 8 of us on one island and Germany all by itself. I checked everyone (even him) and no one had it the turn before, but also I don't remember him needing Musik from me.
Non do I remember Homer ever being born... which is he the one who always comes with Musik? It is your concern when your neighbor's wall is on fire.

Well, Homer is the first Artist to be born. Theoretically, though, an Artist can be born before anyone discovers Music. Most of the time the free Music Artist is the first or the second to be born in the world.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

Yeah, if you get the parthenon early, you're likely to get an early great artist.
I know a lot of people try to avoid that, but it dosn't bother me; you still get more great people overall, and you can usually lightbulb the artist to get something usefull like grabbing theology in time to get christianity, or getting music and getting another artist from it, or something like the.

I need to work out how to make an artist producing GP city. Under Saladin that would be fun.

For Prophets, you should build the Shrines to every religion that you have founded so far. If you have already built all of the Shrines available and not all of the seven religions have been founded yet, then you should use them to discover the new religions. If all the religions and all the shrines are completed, then is a good time to add them to cities. :PThose who live by the sword...get shot by those who live by the gun.
