  • Which tech do you go for first?

So, which tech do you usually go for first, right from the start of the game?

Do you go for bronzeworking, to get a strong army early? Archery, to play it safe millitarally (after all, you might not get copper)? Do you try to grab an early religion? Do you beeline right for pottery and start making cottages? Or is your first priority to utalize the resources around you, and thus go for animal husbandry/farming/mining/hunting/fishing depending on what you've got?

While it really does depend on the chosen Civ, map and starting location, I must admit that as a general rule I do go for bronzeworking first.

I tend to warmonger usually, so.............
I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

Usually Pottery is my priority tech, for the Granary, since I like whipping so much. Cottages are also absolutely essential in nearly every case. I'm happy if I can pick up resource-improvers along the path to Pottery (ie fishing or agriculture).

Bronze working will never be far behind, because I obviously need it for slaving.

Writing is also an essential tech, but not needed immediately.

I also sometimes go religion, if I have mysticism I'll definitely try for one of the religions.

Also with raging barbs on it's important to get Archery ASAP, often before worker techs, since the barbs will just destroy the improvements.

        Yeah, what Blake said.

        Whip it. Whip it good.

Polytheism. I like religions. And Wonders.

(And yes, I do tend to play as Gandhi.)
Participating in my threads is mandatory. Those who do not do so will be forced, in their next game, to play a power directly between Catherine and Montezuma.

Resource improvements for me most of the time. It really depends on what civ and settings I'm playing at though, there is no such thing as an opening that is right for every situation.

                      I voted resources improvments.

Isn't pottery one of them? Pottery is for one granary for each city and probably for several cottages/city.

Because without F/H/C I can do nothing.

                      Best regards,

Depending on the starting techs/traits, I will go for BW, animal husbandry, or pottery. On pangea, I almost always go bronze first. If expansive I will shoot for pottery and then bronze.

Sometimes I have nothing immediately improvable within my capital radius excpet cows or pigs/sheep in which case AH is appropriate. For a few civs (Saladin, Gandhi), I will try for the early religion with meditation or polytheism.

Actually, the real first tech I go for, if I don't have it already, is hunting. Then archery is second.

I usually go straight for BW because I like to starting whipping the population into shape early and can often get a worker out more quickly this way.

Of course it will vary a lot with civs and starting locations. If I’m coastal and have seafood specials, I’ll almost always go straight for fishing.

Also worker build + agro can sometimes be a good alternative with the right resources to work.
