  • Why Civ 4 is not fun.

It's the barbarians. Their attacks are interminable, excessive, and serve no good purpose. Civ 4 is a great example of excellent programming with an uncontested game concept. However, it just isn't fun.

I play to build a "civilization," not to fight off endless barbarbian attacks on every city I have for 100's of years. I'm on the verge of putting this game on the shelf and removing it from my hd.

Civ 3 was ruined by allowing other civs to build within your cultural borders, I stopped playing that game almost immediately. And now, Firaxis ruined Civ 4 with endless and senseless barbarian attacks.

Firaxis can easily fix this, and they should. If I wanted endless battles I'd buy a "shooter" game.

FIRAXIS! Make this the game it should be and cut the barbarian attacks by at least half.

    Torgau:

Did you try to select another barbarian level of activity?

I dont remember the option, but I think you can choose between 2 or 3 level of activity for the barbarians? No?

I dont remember... since I leave this option by default!

And I'm pretty sure you can turn it to OFF!....

      Edit:

And one of the funniest thing of Civilization(like Chess) is to be able to improve your skills, and being able to resolve challenge, that before, you wasn`t able to resolve.

Try the lowest level of activity for the barbarians and learns how to protect yourself and at the same moment to devellop your empire like the way you like(builder) by devellopping your city/culture..

      Good Luck!

What size map do you normally play on? huge maps or maps with only a few civs will generate more barbarians

The barbs mostly arent a problem for me, but I normally am focused on my military as an early priority

try playing a large terra map with lots of extra AI civs, and raging barbs. The barbs should clear up on your continent pretty quick as all the land will be settled, but you will have a suprise if you get to the new world quickly
        Safer worlds through superior firepower

Wuzz. Nothing is wrong with the barbarian attacks.

Or you can be a real man and choose the "raging barbarians" option.

I suggest using the "No barbarians" option and also playing with no AI's. Then you can build your empire in perfect, blissfull peace (maybe realize it's a really boring way to play too).

How about just tick the "no babarians" option, when starting a new game, then you wont have this problem anymore

I really don't get what everyone is complaining about with the Barbarians. Unless you're playing with Raging Barbarians, all that they require you to do is get some very basic defense. And just take an Archer, put him on a forested hill near where the Barbs are coming from, and all Barbarians from that area will be dealt with.

I'd go as far as to say that Barbarians are oftentimes useful, because they really provide free experience for your units.

In most cases, I agree and generally don't have any problems with the barbs and actually like the free promos, but every now and then, maybe 1 game in 10, it seems you get a horde that can't be dealt with in the normal means and you do have to totally convert over to unit building to try to thwart it and sometimes it's not enough.

There's your problem in a nutshell. You are letting the barbarians get to your cities. Instead you should identify the routes the barbarians are coming along and placing defensive units between the approaches and your cities. An axeman on a hilltop, especially one that's been promoted (whether via Barracks or experience) will chop up barbarians quite comfortably.

                      It's not Firaxis's problem.

You may also be like me, you don't build as much military as you're supposed to.

I recently posted asking people how big there armies are, I got responses like "My army is small only 50 or 60 units".

I don't usually build 50 units for the whole game!

Try playing as Julius Caesar. You'll have to fight the urge not to build totally unnecessarily huge praetorian armies.

I just played as the romans, it was impossible to not build huge praetorian armies, which the Germans, English and Malinese didn't like all
