  • too much desert!

Anyone know what to do to shift down the amount of desert present on Temperate settings? Seems like half of the land above and below the equator tends to be desert, and the new system where desert is worth nothing and cannot be terraformed in any way means that really large chunks of the map are unusable. It seems like you get started next to desert a lot, too. Anyone know what to change to maybe cut the amount of desert in half?

I know what you're saying. I've never been pleased with the map generators for a variety of reasons. However, I tend to be extremely picky about my maps. You have three options really,

    1. edit the python code yourself (a bit of a learning curve)
    2. search for mapscripts on civfanatics/apolyton (found a couple of decent ones, but I'm still mostly unimpressed)
    3. play a premade map (I play the earth map 18 civs, with a little WBS editing in word pad I put together a map I love to play. Reducing players down to about 13 you get awesome compition as the AI's don't get crowded out in Europe. The biggest bonus of premade maps...You know exactly what you're going to get.)

    oh and also

you could play Custom Continents, I never get much desert there, however they're really lame looking as they just create giant rectangles.

Ah, those are some good options. Some good custom map scripts would be nice, although really the only change I'm looking for is a reduction in desert. I'm curious about why they chose to put the percentages so high, as I don't think it's particularely accurate and it really doesn't help the gameplay, starting in-between a bunch of patches of desert just makes me quit and regenerate the map.

You can never have too much desert! Well, unless you have high cholesterol.
