  • Hypocritical AIs

I wonder does everyone else get hypocritical AIs? I mean the ones that always expect you to just give them technologies for free or go to war all the time. I have no problem turning them down, but then they get upset. Which can really be a problem if they're Cautious towards you.
Yet, even if I give them what they want, I'll ask for an older technology I passed up and they won't give it to me for anything.
It is your concern when your neighbor's wall is on fire.

I've found that generally AI's that behave like that (the French and Mongol leaders, in particular) are not loved by the rest of the AI's for that very reason, so I focus on building friendships with the other AI's, and then eventually bring my friendly AI's to declare war on the jerk AI's.

The AI's generally will ask for a tech for two reasons:

      1. If they're a really good friend and they don't think you'll mind (usually because they're at war with someone and it isn't going well)

      2. They are far ahead of you in techs and fear you will try to trade a really powerful tech to gain most of the techs they have on you from someone else.

I'll always say yes to #1, and very rarely to #2.

Does no-one else bother demanding stuff from the AI's? Granted for me it's usually "Give me this?" then I declare war on them regardless of whether they cough it up or not (if you're in a position to extermine an AI they'll tend to be scared enough to give in to a demand).

The AI doesn't do such evil things. If you give in to their demands they will let you live for a while longer.

I frequently request stuff from the AI and am frequently rewarded for it.

Right from the start I'll make a huge effort to get an AI or two extremely well disposed to me. I'll convert them to my religion, join them in their wars (nominally, I'll rarely fight unless there is an incredible city site that would fill a gap in my specialist city roster), give them the spare resources I have.

Then I carry out my very odd research routes and ask them for the techs that will allow me to backfill what I'm missing.

I am a builder though, warring to victory just gets so dull.

I have taken to asking for gifts from the AI. Relatively cheap techs that I didn't bother with for a while are good ones to ask for (Monotheism, for me, often ends up being one I get as a gift).

If your relationship with an AI is "pleased" or better, you can often get things for free from them. Techs are a bit trickier, though. I've only been able to get a few of those from an AI, and it was usually something less significant like medicine.

I actually just had Mao give me Machinery completly out of the blue on the Emperor difficulty setting. I was pretty surprised. He was only pleased with me, too.

Perhaps it's because I was one of his co-religionist friends, and was way behind him in tech at the time?

I can usually get a tech out of a friendly AI if I am behind in tech or not too far ahead anyway. But I've found the well runs dry pretty quickly, and the AI rarely gives me more than 1.
