  • Bombing runs...

Now, I like my bombers. Taking down defences, softening up enemy units. Once I've got Radio and Flight, I build a whole lot of bombers.

But why can't my bombing runs disrupt production in enemy cities? And why can't I target (some) of the enemy's buildings? I think Barracks Drydocks, Factories and various Power Plants should be legitimate targets for my bombers.

OK, maybe this can be fixed with this fabulous SDK-thingy. I have no idea how that works, though. Anyone who knows how to do these things?

Smart bombing would be great too.

Though it's indirect, you can disrupt city production by targeting the improvements for bombing. You can judge which ones are actually being worked by the 'active' animation, or you can use a Spy and determine exactly how production is being achieved - some cities for example, can get a lot of base production from specialists.

Suddenly, that new building that's being worked on is going to take sixty turns instead of six, at least until workers swarm the bomb sites. Mission accomplished

Maybe with Satellites we could get Smart Bombing, allowing us to choose between the following:

        Target Units
        Target Fortifications
        Target Terrain Improvements/Buildings
        Target Construction

Basically, buildings could only be targeted for destruction after the city fortifications are bombarded to zero, but you would get a percentage chance of destroying a random building (World Wonders being immune of course).

Targeting Construction would mean something like the currently-being-built item would lose half the hammers it has accumulated towards what it is building. Again, the city fortifications must first be destroyed.

Both of the above would be reduced in effectiveness by 50% if the defending city has Bunkers.

I can remember people requesting this option before CivIII came out, so I don't know why it hasn't been implemented yet. You used to be able to destroy specific buildings with spies in CivII, but clearly thats not an option anymore.

Since I've been waiting years and years for devs to implement this option, i think your best bet would be from the mod community (if it's even possible within the game right now).

Aircraft are pretty dull in comparison to the rest of the units, and I'm disappointed that more hasn't been done with them.

For example, if aircraft had something similar to experience, then you could have certain new types of aircraft (or aircraft promotions) unlock depending on what sort of action is being seen. If they're constantly coming up against SAM Infantry, it makes sense that you would want some sort of countermeasures. More powerful ordnance for those pesky units hiding in bunkers. Or, if you're a relatively peaceful nation and use your aircraft to perform recon, you might develop better imaging (lets you see unit movements as lines, helping you determine if a build-up to war is occuring) or build aircraft with better range.

However, given that you can't make a single aircraft that can do everything (and you shouldn't be able to if the game is to be balanced) you naturally won't be able to apply all upgrades to all aircraft, and some should be mutually exclusive anyway IMHO.

I always thought non-lethal bombardment was a bad idea.

As C3C so eloquently demonstrated, lethal land bombardment on aircraft is a terrible idea.

Pearl Harbor and Iraq are good examples of lethal bombardment.

Lethal bombardment affects military units, not entire countries. The Iraqi military collapsed rather nicely don't you think?

The fleet can be thought of as a stack of units. As the crew of the USS Arizona can attest, individual units were eliminated.
