  • Ending resource trades

Does anyone know if there is any effect on the diplo status if you cancel a resource trade with an AI civ?

I am wondering if I have to continue to give a resource to a civ for the entire game if I accede to a demand early on, or if I have to live with a gold for resource trade that was a good deal early on but becomes a bad deal over time because the gold I get stays the same.

If there is no diplo hit, then the decision is easy; if there is, then it becomes more of a tub-thumper.

Absolutely not. You'll get a fairly weighty penalty against them if you cancel ALL trade, but cancelling a single deal will only effect the speed that you'll get the +1 bonus for trading fairly, or whatever it's called.

I'm constantly cancelling deals with AI's and then re-starting them because half the time I can't get anything on the higher difficulty levels other than gold in return. Particularly in late-game, the AIs will start to get extra gold-per-turns available every five or ten turns, so I'll cancel the previous deal for say, 35 gold per turn, and re-offer the resource for the now-available 40 gold-per-turn, etc.

As far as what I think you're talking about, though, you can bend to a demand for a free resource and get the +1 bonus for respecting their demand, but then cancel it as soon as you can and replace it with a deal where you get something in return. This actually is the only way you can make friends with some of the AIs, by giving free resources early in the game. Tukogawa comes immediately to mind.
