  • Rethinking Religon Usefulness

Until last night, I thought little or no use for religon.

I had started the game with the soul Idea of infesting Taoreligon into as many other AI cities as possible. Which meant having more open border treaties than normal.

This is a challenge in it self, especially if you pick Islands, and the fact you can only have up to 3 missionaries at one time.

    Long story short

I had managed to infect all of Egypt, half of Germany. Both were the closest neighbors. Which was about 12 foriegn cities.

It was late in game (1970's) I had managed to keep 80% research, budget was up and down and averageing more downs....

Until I built the major religious building and would recieve +1 gold from every city with Tao

SO it jusy not villages, its the tithing that helps

You cannot just see the spread on the minimap. You actually have a line of sight in all those cities.

You get that when 1) your state religion is taoist and 2) you own the holy city of taoism.

btw considering the date is 1970 the spread of taoism isn't that impressive.

when the AI civs seemed to play tag team war
First was Germany, then Aztecs, then Isabella
and Egypt was slowing turning hatefull, despite all the trade/open border we had going for a long long long time

It was all I could do (and the first to build one)

What was also fun in this game

Isabela was just about rock bottom, she declares war on me....fine.

I sink every and any ship she sends

I go to invade her lands, after the first city falls.
Whamm .....she has SAM infantry and from my peaceful neighbor Saladin (whom) I was catching up to

So now the weakest Civ is a powerfull as the first.

As I see it, there are two questions about religion, because they have costs and benefits: foundation and converting.

              Religions are awesome.

I have tested a few games on Noble/Prince. I could usually found most of the later religions, and if I limit the number of my cities I usually can get two religions founded in the same one. This is great, because all the finance buildings (market, bank, grocer, etc.) go into turbo overload after I build the two holy shrines. This city alone will generate 200+ coins each turn.

Try 3 or 4 or 5 religions and build the holy shrines for each. Combine that with financial and you got a powerhouse of gold and research

Plus spread that state religion around first as soon as you can, the neighbors will like you a lot better

A religious game is nice and strong.
But it can have two prices: expansion and military. So,also here, a balance is needed.

My best domination win was on a tiny map with 6 ai's. I won at 840ad. I founded two relgions and conqured all but one of the rest. I never bothered declaring a state relgion and I did not build a single missionary. It can be fun to run up the gold but sometimes it can be rather tedious.

Try this some time: Capture an enemy city that has is the holy city for two relgions just before you get taoisim or islam. It will put the holy city there giving you three. Probably easier than forcing it on your capital.

I didn't build any other cities until I had 4. The 5 came in another city. It was a bit of an experiment.
