How much point is there to modding in an ability to have cottages on deserts? Initially, an extra specialist is worth more than a desert cottage. And since a specialist contributes great person points, a desert cottage would have to do a lot of maturing before working it would be clearly more worthwhile than an extra specialist.

No cottage in the desert?

Any of the above would add random complications that would just leave the non hardcore confused though.
Another good idea would be to limit cottage growth on desert to Hamlet or village. They cannot grow bigger unless after discovering some advanced technology like biology.
This makes more sence in fact as in the real world a dessert cannot really sustain large towns unless foodstuff and other things are imported, grown artificialy or with special equipment not available early.GOWIEHOWIE! Uh...does that

Depends upon the map.
For instance, The Ice Age scenerio has no flood plains, just desert along the river and probably on purpose.

I would leave it the way it is or just allow cottages on an Oasis tile.
After all in real life the deserts are taking over the fertile land in most of the world and not the otherway arround. The only civs that have built cities in the desert are the super rich ones.

I took the easy way out and wrote a map generator so I can adjust the amount of desert in my map.
To a developer, that's the "easy way'.

I don't see why we should be able to build cottages in the dessert, as there's not really much use for them there (looking at it from the real world point of view). But as has been said, maybe it could become possible with Refrigeration. Cottages on tiles with an oasis would make more sense thoughThis space is empty... or is it?
