  • Nukes won't launch

I tried launching my ICBMs on the last turn of a game, but they wouldn't launch (target square grey.) Has this happened to anybody else?

Yes, it means there are some units from another civ(s) near the square you are trying to detonate the nuke on.

Try picking a square next to the square you would like the blast to hit until you can get the designated square in the blast radius.

If the blast area contains anything but the enemy civ's squares and units, you won't be able to launch.

I don't think that's the case here. I tried targeting many squares when it became apparent that I couldn't select my primary targets, including squares belonging to a different civ, and my own land, and no dice. Do I have to already be engaged in a declared war to use nukes?

You can only target an enemies squares, so yes, you have to be at war.

You need to declare war before they will launch, and no other civ's units can be in the blast area

All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

That's a drag. Any other unit can "declare" war just by crossing the border, absent an open borders agreement. It would be a little more realistic to have the nuke launch be its own declaration of war, regardless of existing diplomacy. There's not much chance of an accidental launch

Imagine the diplomacy negatives if you did though

If you're going to nuke an enemy city, the chances are you're going to want to wipe out the city with your ground action (going for a conquest victory) and so in the short time it will take to wipe him out, you need not worry about environmental repercussions. Send in the workers later, when they're not doing anything useful and you don't have to worry about them being nabbed.
