I think I know what's wrong now in my game. I switched to "free religion," ergot, even though I founded Hinduism, it is not my "state religion."

Yeah, I get a little wild and crazy sometimes. I did it on Noble with "raging barbs" and still put four others out of the game in my "warmonger" scenario. I think the extra bucks and foreign relations from having founded an early religion kinda helped with me being a warmonger. Wouldn't try it in MP though.

If you mean Buddhism, Hindusim or Monotheism by early religion then, in my experience, the later religions don't seem to do so bad and can spread quite quickly with open borders and a little help. Often you won't get a shrine that much quicker either.

(nods) Yeah, that's it. Once you switch to free religion, you lose the recon advantage of spreading your state religion.
