  • What do you get from Liberalism?

Depending on the game, mostly I'll take Astronomy to conquer barbs on the new world.

Sometimes I'll take Nationalism, if I really desperate for Cavalry.

What would you get as free tech from Liberalism?
What is the most expensive tech possible to get while playing huge-terra-monarch-12 AI ?

    Depends on your path.

You can find out the cost (in turns) by moving the mouse pointer over each individual one.

I usually take Nationalism. It's expensive to research, has a nice pair of associated Wonders, and doesn't make any of my Wonders obsolete.
Participating in my threads is mandatory. Those who do not do so will be forced, in their next game, to play a power directly between Catherine and Montezuma.

Nationalism, Chemistry or Astronomy, whichever is most applicable for the situation. More rarely Economics, you need to be confident in your tech lead to make Economics worth it.

With a confident tech lead I've also picked up techs like Steel and Scientific Method.

I think these are probably the right ones but I almost always take Chemistry for the immediate military lead on land and sea. OK, the sea advantage needs Astronomy too but once you have frigates, you rule the seas for long enough to take on a significant island hopping invasion.

Usually chemistry, for the superb land unit (grenadier) it unlocks...

Almost always either Astronomy or Nationalism. I generally research Economics right after Liberalism.

Usually I take nationalism, aiming at either democracy or military tradition. Getting the Taj Mahal golden age is also a very nice boost since there are a lot of new buildings and units available in this era.

If I have the prerequisite techs, I'll take chemistry if planning a grenadier war, and astronomy if there are large islands to colonize or I'm desperate for ocean trade routes.

I don't delay liberalism to try and get economics, I think the benefits of getting a head start on one of these three techs is worth more than trying to squeeze more free beakers out anyway.

You also need to be confident in your tech lead to research Gunpowder before Liberalism.

Usually, the choices offered to me are Nationalism, Astronomy, Gunpowder, and Print Press. I take Printing Press for the +1 gold in villages and towns, and it leads to replaceable parts. Nationalism or Astronomy are not on my tech paths usually. It depends if your game extends to the modern era of course. But even then, Nationalism or Astronomy never seem to be priorities.

I'm actually not a huge fan of the Taj Mahal. The return on the investment of hammers is pretty good, and it's immedeate which is nice, but it's not nearly as high a return over the long term as most wonders have.

On the other hand, usually after I get liberalism my next goal is to be the first one to democracy for the statue of libery, so I do take Nationalism sometimes myself.

I always take Astronomy, simply because it's the most expensive to reserach about that time and by then most AIs are relucant to trade away a tech until a 2nd or 3rd civ already has it.

                        I then beeline to Economics.

The reason I like Taj Mahal has nothing to do with return on investment, although the bonus golden age commerce is worth the price. I build it to transfer production to newer cities that need help finishing their builds of Universities, Banks and so on.

the main reason i go for economics is to get corporatin quickly so running free market with corporation gives me an extra 2 trade routes + greatmerchant.

the extra money is very useful her for upgrading obsolete units

if i can i get printing press and education just before liberalism
