They make good graphics as second unique unit on the Spanish.

For some reason I thought the Explorer was one of those units that can't get the Healing promotion w/o the Red Cross, like Tanks.

A Partisan unit is an interesting idea.

A unit that can only move around in your cultural borders (and of your former cities). Invisible and not affected by ZoC, can move freely over hills and through forests. No need for support and supply.

You can't build them. However, a number of Partisans are spawned when one of your cities is captured by an enemy (except barbarians).

I tried using an Explorer to explore the New World in a terra map game. He lasted 1 turn before a maceman whacked his skull and stole his armor. There are no Squantos or Pocahontases on the terra maps. These natives are worse than the Aucas.

You just took too long getting there. You can easily get to the new world while the barbs still have longbowmen, archers, and warriors as their only units.

Once you get compass, build 3 or 4 explorers, then as soon as you get navigation, immediately build 3 or 4 caravels and ship them off, at least one heading east and one heading west. You'll most likely get the circumnavigation bonus, and with any care at all, you can explore the entire new world. Half the time, I just put them on explore and ignore them, and still see nearly everything. It helps if you have barracks where the explorers are build and you prom0te them to wilderness 2.
