  • Sugar Resourse-no Appearence!

    Hello to all,

I want to report to you something that i m seeing frequently.
it is very rear to enjoy the sugar resource in the game.in the civilopedia,i have seen that this resource appears in tropical terrain-climates.so after MANY games,i have turned the climate switched to tropical always.then, still no effect,i havent spot sugar in any game.in approximately 40-50 complete games i have played, only once i have seen sugar, and in only 2 pieces of it.
therefore, please can you show me where should i intervene to edit the xml to make sugar appearence ratio higher(make sugar appearence more often?)
its a pity that a resource like this it seems it exists only in civilopedia.
of course i want your comments-experiences about this fenomenon.

Now that I think about it, I've only spotted sugar once over the period of the many games I've played, and it was in a temperate world, surrounded by jungle. What're the stats to sugar?

        Sugar's no big deal

You get a small food bonus and the basic +1 happiness for sugar. It's the poorer relation of rice in that

        1) The benefit comes later (plantations v farms)
        2) The bonus health comes a lot later (grocers v granaries)
        3) You get +1 food for the improved site
        4) No +1 food for the irrigated farm.

For me, a game without sugar is like a game without whales.

It's strange that no-one thinks of molasses or honey as good alternatives for sugar. I'm also rather bemused that BANANAS are considered such a staple source of food in this game. Why not also give horses a +1 health and some food bonus on pasturing.

Historically, sugar was huge. I remember reading that during 1700's one sugar island produced as much revenue as all of the 13 colonies.

I've seen no lack of sugar in my games. Are you running any mods or altered any files?

                My bad

I'm afraid I don't know how you can make sugar appear more often. Playing continents a lot I do find that it has a tendency to appear on one island in large quantities. So you either see lots of it or very little until you can sail the world to the sugar island.

Overall, I would have thought that the resources appear with almost equal frequency (approx 1 of each per civ).

But with the benefits that sugar brings I can assure you that lacking sugar is no great hardship.

The problem I have with the game interpretation is that it is very undervalued as a commerce generator. Sugar was big business for the early Anglo/British empire and was also a huge driving force behind the triangular slave trade routes in the 17th and 18th centuries. Without sugar, the caribbean islands would look very different today.

                  agree!

                  yes,

i agree with you.the new world there-carribean-brought many resource materials to europe, which they were very difficult to find.not only sugar you will permit me to sayso spices, cotton, tobbaco, was among these.if you remember amiga computer, there was a game called colonization, again by sid meiers hand.its very close to civ 4 thought engine.

I think it might be less frequent than some resources, like rice or corn, but that's just my vague feeling. I usually play pangea, which seems to have several sources of sugar on the map, as one would expect with a fair amount of jungle on pangea. Turn on the resource button to make them more visible just in case you've overlooked them.

                      mmm

                      well
in continents or archipelago they are not appear.ok,lets say that for archipelago its difficult, but for continents as well?
and why all other resources appear then?

I think the folks who haven't seen much sugar are just unlucky. I have not noticed that sugar is particularly scarce using standard map settings.

When you say that there is none in the world, do you mean that literally? You've explored the entire world, turned on the little Resource Finder button, and looked around for it? It could easily be the case that in some games there is no one willing or able to trade you sugar.

                          exactly

                          exactly.

i didnt conclude this because no one wanted to trade sugar-but because no one in the entire planet had it.perhaps i m too unlucky, idont know how else i can expain it,althought the first guy in this thread said that he's facing the same"problem".

Getting a particular resource to appear more often is a matter of a few numbers in CIV4BonusInfos.xml.
To change it, just copy the file from "....\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Assets\xml\terrain\" to ".....\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\CustomAssets\xml\terrain\" then open it in a text or xml editor, and search for "BONUS_SUGAR" (its on line 1653 in my version). A few lines lower you will find
                            Code:
                            	<iConstAppearance>50</iConstAppearance>
                            	<iMinAreaSize>3</iMinAreaSize>
                            	<iMinLatitude>0</iMinLatitude>
                            	<iMaxLatitude>90</iMaxLatitude>
                            	<Rands>
                            		<iRandApp1>25</iRandApp1>
                            		<iRandApp2>25</iRandApp2>
                            		<iRandApp3>0</iRandApp3>
                            		<iRandApp4>0</iRandApp4>
                            	</Rands>
play around with the numbers in <iConstAppearance> and <Rands>
The wiki has the beginning of an explanation of how these work, but if you increase them you get more.
