  • Gamepad with Civ?

Anybody using a gamepad with CivIV? I tried my Saitek, but the cursor movement is too slow. A pad would be nice, if it responded as quickly as the mouse. Any recommendations?

Whu don't you use a mouse? An optical mouse is dirt cheap these days.

How would you be able to demand tons of gold from your vanquished enemies without having to press the "Up" key on your gamepad hundreds of times?

Hadn't considered that. Of course, I haven't vanquished anybody yet, either

I'm having a very hard time figuring out how a pad ever "would be nice" to play Civ IV
This space is empty... or is it?

I personally use a Dance Dance Revolution pad. Launching a large scale war will really give you a workout!

There was this fellow, who got a treadmill and a IR mouse thingy and started jogging while civving....

I thought about linking keystrokes to joypad buttons. For quick access to menus and stuff. But since I'm at arms length from my keyboard anyways...

Fun thing was, when ever I hovered my cursor over a button in Civ3, the pad would rumble. Force feedback.
I've allways wanted to play "Russ Meyer's Civilization"

I want to hook up one of those Nintendo light guns, just so that I can program the trigger button to declare war in the diplo screen.

                BANG take that sucker!

                  I've actually considered doing that.

I could also see using a DDR-style pad for playing civilization - use it as a replacement for the number pad for unit movement and don't use any other means of moving units. For a real workout don't even use stack movement.

I know what you mean, I still have nightmares of playing SimCity on the SNES. At the time I didn't know what I was missing, though, but when I got my 486 and SimCity2000 - there's no way I could imagine going back.

Well, maybe if some console gets exclusive rights to Civ5, heh.

Why dont you use a neural interface?

It plugs in though the anus - you have to shove it a bit, and attaches to the bottom of the spinal column.

Try it. Get a kitchen knife and hack off the cable to your mouse, then shove it up there.

You get direct control of all your units, and you can declare war by farting.

I would like to play civ with a racing control set with a steering wheel, pedals, and a gearshift. That would be kewl.

I got civ3 hooked up to my nintendo power glove, but that wouldnt be a good idea for civ4. Every time a game drops to the desktop in a multiplayer game I would be to tempted to bash my monitor to pieces.

                          Possibility

                              nice gamepad...

I wanted to try a gamepad so that I'm not stuck in this half-leaning forward posture with my hand hovering over my mouse while I wait for the next opportunity to issue orders. Civ isn't a constant action experience like an FPS; With a pad, I can sit back in my chair, or stand up and stretch my legs for a bit.

I had mapped a bunch of keystrokes to my Saitek, but losing the mouse scroll wheel is a major drag, and for some reason I can't program the right analog stick, which would be ideal for movement commands. The d-pad on the Saitek is crap, can't get units to move diagonally. With a good pad with really comprehensive programming software, I think this would work pretty well.
