  • Call me stupid but...

Both my son(8) and I play Civ4 on the same machine as different users.

He still has that problem where his leader name comes up as the computer name by default.

How the heck do I fix this? I don't remember how I got it cleared up for me and I've tried a million things, but nothing seems to stick. (Nor can I seem to get his default difficulty to shift from settler.)

Note to manual writers: this might be a good thing to include...I seem to recall this being an issue for a lot of folks soon after the game came out.

Don't you have the patch installed? I think that addresses the problem once and for all.

Yes I do, and apparently it does not.

Perhaps it has something to do with him not being the installing user?

You can change your name in the ini file.

I guess it should be possible to create a ini file for each user.

the patch doesn't do anything for me. Very annoying. I would like it to use the default leader name until I change it. My last game I played as Frederick. There was no real need to use anything else for Germany. but I had to change it from my computer name. My computer name happens to be butthead. So you can see why I wouldn't want to use that name for my civ4 leader.

In custom game, my leader name always is the computer name, until I change it. Very annoying. It has been so in all the patches so far. I just reinstalled though, so let's see if the current patch I have updated to helps.

Nope, it dosn't, you have to manually edit the .ini file: Somewhere at the bottom of the file you will find
                  Code:
                  ; In-game Alias
                  Alias =
Here yst substitute whatever is after the "="-sign with whatever your son prefers as his leadername.

About the default dificulty level mine does remember the level, but you can set it in the .ini-file. Just find the
                  Code:
                  ; Handicap for quick play
                  QuickHandicap = HANDICAP_SETTLER
                  and change it to
                  HANDICAP_PRINCE, HANDICAP_MONARCH, HANDICAP_IMORTAL, or HANDICAP_DEITY

I don't seem to have a .ini file

I have .ini(s) for the various mods; those that came with the game or patch plus a couple that came with mods I have downloaded. But there doesn't seem to be a .ini for the game itself. Is it hiding under another name?

                      It's in your My Documents/My Games/Civilization 4 folder.

When you open Explorer you should see something called "My Games." It's in the civ 4 folder in there.

PS I've changed the in-game alias and it works like a dream

Is it possible to use conditionals in the .ini file so that the in-game alias is civ dependent?
